The F5 Tornado That Almost Hit TWO Nuclear Bombs

On April 26, 1991 a volatile severe weather setup presented itself across the central and southern U.S. plains. A rare high risk for thunderstorms and tornadoes was issued by the Storm Prediction Center on the day prior. The day itself would live up to the hype with dozens of tornadoes touching down including the Andover, Kansas F5 tornado. The tornado would be notable for numerous reasons including the fact that it almost hit two separate nuclear bombs. The tornado would end up claiming 17 lives and would leave it's mark on the land and the people forever. This video documents this tornado and the volatile weather setup that led to this historic outbreak as well.

I was about 10 miles south of this event. Sun was shining and very, very humid. Being it was a low precipitation supercell, it made it all but invisible on local radar. Very good video. Good job.

I remember this tornado. I lost a few friends in this. One of my friends dad was picked up while trying to to run away and he said that the force of being ripped backwards while running at full speed was unlike anything that could be described. He said last thing he could remember was seeing his neighbors, pickup coming straight for him then lights out truck peeled his head like an orange. He was found almost 1 mile from the trailer park that was mentioned in this video he ended up living through this event, and only passed away two years ago.

2 of the most famous tornado videos I grew up seeing all the time. Had no idea they were from the same day and same storm

The video of it hitting the AFB as more of a rope and then turning into a stovepipe, and the one of it later behind that row of houses, are still some of the most terrifying tornado footage ever captured.

This is one reason why bases generally send their planes up well before the storms arrive now. Anything with ordnance goes to another base until it's safe to send it back.

The sounds of absolute panic in those airmen's voices fills my stomach with gut-churning dread.

I lived in south Wichita at this time, and had my home destroyed by this specific storm, shortly before the funnel arrived at McConnell, just after passing over I-35. Luckily, myself and my family were at a local elementary school, about 4 or 5 blocks from the actual path. The entire area was absolutely decimated. Great video on this specific storm.

The WORST spot to take shelter under an underpass. The suction that is produced is intense

Where my home was is visible on the aerial shot @ 7:51-just west across Andover Road from Golden Spur. We lost everything but our lives. Scariest thing I’ve ever experienced.

Let’s take a minute to remember how ballsy those cops were for trying everything in their power to alert people while putting their own lives in danger. Truly incredible.

My stepmom came face to face with this tornado.. she was about 5 years old at the time and it tore through* her backyard, nearly missing her house but directly hitting her neighbors. Im forever grateful that it nearly missed her and her family.🙏🏽

Even with the poorer picture quality on cameras back then you could still tell how violent that thing was. Absolutely incredible footage

I don't think I'll sleep well again with the knowledge of nukes on planes and tornados.

It was an F2 when it hit my grandma's old trailer in Haysville, an F3 when it hit our house in Oaklawn (south Wichita) which we saw from less than a half mile away, and the multivortex F5 when it hit my grandma's new trailer in Golden Spur (the video from the dashboard camera of the cop car showed her new one as it was pulling into the park). She and my grandpa were working at Boeing at the time and they didn't tell them a tornado came through until after it passed because they didn't want them to stop working. They got in trouble for that one. Also, the base learned from this so now when we're projected to have tornados, you can watch the planes all fly out. With the tornado in 2012, I believe it was, one of my friends who was stationed up in SD said some of the planes went up to their base.

Thank you for not being like these other YouTubers who are so overly dramatic and exaggerates unnecessary details. Their voices are so annoying and over the top. And I see you at least try to be as accurate as possible. I respect that. Ive studied most of these famous tornadoes so I have a grasp of certain details on many that some YouTubers flat out lie or poorly research.

1991 was a pretty interesting year:

The Andover Kansas tornado.
Detroit Lions going to the NFC Championship.
The fall of the Soviet Union.
Nirvana's Nevermind was released.
Terminator 2 was released.
Nickelodeon launched it's cartoon lineup.
