Typically, the "dead man walking" is actually a multiple vortex tornado. This means that the meso itself is typically not able to support one large funnel with the vortex's not being conformed within it. Yes, this does signify strong tornadoes, however they are pretty random and don't necessarily mean a tornado is extraordinarily powerful. Tornadoes like the El Reno tornado in 2013 was multi vortex at the beginning of its life due to what was said earlier in this comment.

As a meteorologist who has been studying weather for over 11 years, I can 100% say that I’ve seen 2 dead man walking shaped tornadoes in my life time and one of the took my 2 best friends away from me… So every time I hear the dead man walking tornado phrase I get chills up my spine knowing my friends fates were held in the hands of a dead man walking tornado…😢

Fun fact: 20 tornadoes struck Jarell that same day at the same time. 6 EF0, 6 EF 1, 3 EF 2, 3 EF3, 1 EF 4, 1 EF5. And the EF5 was 1.2 km wide or (3/4) miles (reaching 261 or 318 mph) times two that of a cat 5 hurricane. And went 5-10 mph so it can leave nothing behind. And a resident hid in a bathtub and landed 400FT away from her home. 300 cattle’s were also unalived. Some really injured, and hundreds of cattle were dismembered, and some skinned alive because of the strong winds. One small part of this tragedy was a shopping market and the manager went outside and saw an EF3 coming straight towards his shop and demanded people to stay inside the cooler. 50 people survived because of him. And he died… Rip.

The amount of people that died during that was extremely sad, the bodies were so disfigured that they couldn’t tell if they even were human remains

Another interesting fact is that deadman walking tornadoes tend to be so powerful that they spawn tornadoes circling them miles away. Which is why the natives used to say if you're close enough to clearly see the legs dancing of course without Camara zoom, you're in grave danger.

Well the real reason for the “dead man walking” tornado is for one of two reasons: 1) the Indian legend that if you see the dead man walking you’re already dead. 2) from the Joplin f5 that the most famous photo appeared to show and walking tornado like this, but he is right, if you see a tornado with multiple vortices (looks like a lot of small tornadoes instead of one) it’s extremely strong and f4+ strength

All I need to say is Jarrel Texas. Look up the damage it caused. That was a dead man walking and is one of the most terrifying tornadoes to have ever occurred imo

Native Americans called this the dead man walking, because they said when you see it you're about to die. Jarrell was hit by one and tens of people died and wiped a whole subsection off the map. The only thing left was the pavement where the house once were. To this day you can still see the path is took, because it scarred the ground so badly.

Probably the most infamous 'Dead man walking' Tornado is the one that destroyed the town of Jarrell, Texas back in 1997.
