Ok, let’s just take a minute and agree that Ian McDiarmid‘s acting in this scene is absolutely marvelous! The way he speaks and the loooks jeeez!

For the first time in almost 20 years, I just have realized this. Palps was having a hard time trying to convince Anakin about how dangerous the Jedi are. And he was making a good point, but it was just not enough. Anakin had gone through an entire war alongside the Jedi and the Republic, and has had very good deeds along the way. He needed more, better firepower to convince him.

Fear.

So, the opera was showing some "kind" of an egg and some spermatozoon "flying" around it (this is what I just realized). A metaphor within a metaphor: Palpatine suddenly brought up the topic about a Sith lord who could make midichlorians into creating new life (like this apparent egg and the spermatozoon just in front of them). At the same time, new life was the cause of death for Padme, who Anakin was thinking about. Then the tale makes a darker turn, as it awakens a search for a theoretical, unknown, unnatural power that could undo this inevitable fate. Finally, the tale ends in an even darker note: the vivid memory of treason, a student who had killed his master after being taught this new lesson, becoming the only apparent living being with such knowledge. The solution to the problem, Anakin's only hope. And all which requires in exchange is to fall deep into the Dark Side of the Force.

"Is it possible to learn this power?"
"Not from a Jedi."

Now fear has been spread. Now a choice is in front of Anakin: a gamble, powered by fear. He's been exploited both verbally and visually (the opera) by Palpatine the whole meeting, and he didn't even notice it the slightest.

Such an incredible scene. And the acting. And the mythos. Almost too good to be true.
