How to Skid Stop on a Fixed Gear (Without Foot Straps)

How to skid without straps, this was one of the first videos I filmed so be gentle with the comments!
I filmed a 2nd video where I used straps, it's worth taking a look at!

The reason is historical. Fixed gear bikes have been traditionally used for track racing, long after most other bikes had switched to using freewheels. In the high-speed velodrome environment, it would be dangerous if the rider in front of you could brake suddenly: you would crash into them, and likely most of the group behind you would join in the fun (this is also true in a paceline or peloton on normal roads). So brakes have always been banned, and aren't really needed on the track anyway.

If you still have some troubles you could try this.
What i do is, i get one of my feet of my pedals and let it almost touch the ground
i don't know why but i can put more strength in my leg when i only have 1 leg on one of my pedals. this makes it a lot easier to skid. dunno if it works for you.

I remember doing this as a kid. After switching to and from multi-gears to single gear after 10 years, I can say I totally suck at this.

no helmet and no brakes? If you're still learning, please at least keep your front brake until you master this.

What kind of hard ware do you have on your bike. I had a cheap bike that would do it every once in a while, until i got a better crankset, crogs, and chain

I could skid but i kept bruising my thigh when i lock my wheels. I am familiar with skid stopping now. Any ways to avoid this?

So I'm looking into building a fixed gear out of the dozens of parts bikes I have. Is this skid stop idea kind of the same as when we used to ride little kids bikes that didn't have hand brakes? To me it looks to be the same process, maybe a little more difficult with the larger diameter wheels or something.

which gear ratio would you recommend to skid?
In the moment I ride 52/16 and thats not so nice and I can't skid with this gear ratio.
