Often the table of values goes from around -3 to +3, but it also depends on the parabola. If the graph has been shifted right or left very much you'd want to shift the x values too. Once you start putting some values in for x you want the end of the table to have y values about the same as the first x's you put in. This way the vertex is somewhere around the middle of the points you plot.
