Step 1

Open EA app > Library > Click on the dots next to the game you having problems > Click Repair.

Step 2
Start downloading any free game like Apex. Then cancel the installation. After canceling try download the game you want to download.

None of the suggestions here work. I was able to solve it myself after days. After purchasing an Ea pass, add the free games to your library, then add the game you want to download to the library. Congratulations, you solved the problem.

Had the same issue, repair the game instead of update, it suddenly started to download, even with the error message while downloading it's working.
Only applies to already downloaded games with updates needed.

This actually worked for me thank you. Although if you get the error where you cant open your shortcut anymore just go to you apps and click repair and pin the app to task bar hopes this helps anyone else if this happens to you.

Just downloading the Microsoft C++ and restarting worked or me. It took a good while to "prepare download" but it eventually caught on and resumed downloading.

Here's what worked for me:
1. Make sure your download queue is empty and close the EA App. You might want to reopen the app and double-check that it doesn't show a frozen download in progress, which kept happening to me while I was doing this. I also closed the EA Background Service in the Windows Task Manager, but I don't think that's necessary.

2. In your EA Games directory, create a new folder with the same name as your game's normal installation directory. It's usually just the name of your game, but if you're not 100% sure what it is, you might be able to find it by googling. Otherwise, there's no harm in trial and error, since the remaining steps take like 5 seconds. Here are some I already know:

EXAMPLE 1. Mirror's Edge: C:/Program Files/EA Games/Mirrors Edge
EXAMPLE 2. Mirror's Edge Catalyst: C:/Program Files/EA Games/Mirrors Edge Catalyst
EXAMPLE 3. The Sims 4: C:/Program Files/EA Games/The Sims 4/Game/bin
NOTE: If you already have The Sims 4 downloaded and are trying to download an expansion, I can't confirm that this method will work for you. If you follow the steps below and substitute the .exe file with some known filenames associated with your expansion, then it might still work though.

3. Inside the folder, right-click -> New -> Text Document. (If you don't see that option, then press the Windows key, type Notepad, press Enter, go to File -> Save As... -> Save it with any name in the folder from above.)

4. Make sure you can see and edit file extensions. If your new file doesn't show ".txt" at the end of its name, then you need to open any folder in Windows and in the top bar: View -> Show -> File name extensions -> make sure this is checked

5. Rename your new file to match exactly the name of the executable program from the game you're trying to download (e.g., "MirrorsEdge.exe"). The PC Gaming Wiki will almost certainly have this somewhere in your game's wiki article if you press Ctrl + F and search for ".exe". If not, you can google it. Here are some I already know:

EXAMPLE 1. MIrror's Edge: MirrorsEdge.exe
EXAMPLE 2. Mirror's Edge Catalyst: MirrorsEdgeCatalyst.exe
EXAMPLE 3. The Sims 4: TS4.exe

6. Relaunch the EA App. It should say that your game is already downloaded, but there's an "Update Required." Just ignore that. Instead, click the three dots in the top-right corner of the game icon and select "Repair".

7. Once it's finished downloading, play the game :)
