So what do you do when the leather or vinyl in your car rips or tears? Well Travis Lamb from 3M Automotive shows us how to repair your leather car seat in a couple of simple steps. As vehicles get a bit older, the leather seats can deteriorate and rip. The 3M Leather/Vinyl Kit is very simple to use and has all the necessary items you need to perform this repair at home. The main point of the product is to stop rips from continuing to get bigger, but is also can repair and mask those tears too!

First off get the backing material and cut out a piece larger than the rip you want to fix. Place that fabric behind/under the leather itself. Next, take the adhesive and work it into the affected area making sure the adhesive fills the rip completely. Once that is dried you can mix up the correct color using the supplied mixing guide. Mix the colors and hold it up to your leather to ensure a close match. Then apply the color to the dried adhesive. Finally take the textured material along with the heat transfer tool (which can be heated up using an iron), heat up the material which will bleed the fabric onto your repaired surface.

Instead of this expensive kit that I returned because I realized what it was you can use acrylic paint Walmart has it in arts and crafts. Some have a filler you can water down acrylic jel medium or use Elmer's Glue.
That is exactly what's in these kits.
You can even use satin finish acrylic spray paint.
After you've painted it spray it with flat clear coat to stop it from coming off.
The expensive kits don't bother telling you that.

I used the kit today and let me say it's not perfect but it is better than rip or burn mark. I used the test material first and gave it a go was ok. Y ou need glue dry for 4 hrs so when i made repair today i used hot glue gun instead but i do not know if it would adhere as well for a tare i was patching burn holes. I taped off surrounding area to contain patch material added color vinyl then applied texture sheet and used heat trnsfer tool. The texture comes out nice but it takes a couple times to cure. play around with it worth a shot

If you just have a fine crack do you just use the adhesive with the coloring later or open the crack up and jam the fabric under it?

I have bmw with white leather seats, the seats are in great condition but my driver seat is fading and turning back from cleaning and dyes from jeans. Can I use this kit to just dye the seat?

Ok, so not much info here, and yes its product placement, however, the kit will probably have instructions, and the professional repair guys do it the same way. They just don't buy these little kits. They have sources for each of the materials. BUT - the process is the same.

Think I'd rather just leave it alone till it's completely ripped and buy a new seat or have it reupholstered. Really not hard to unbolt a chair out of vehicles and send it out... :P

Why not do it and show us with action instead of telling us how to do it with words?

very confusing direction. you cannot use the seat of your car for 24 hours something important he did not mention.  make sure if you are going to do this do not use the car if not you just wasted your time. or you have the color transferred to your clothes.

On Monday i'm going to take the drivers seat out, 4 bolts, one electrical cable, take it to an upholster and have the torn section replaced and the two threads that are breaking fixed as well. This is how you "fix" a tear in your seat.
