How to understand if the next byte is a new character or a continuation of the current character in UTF-8

UTF-32 is not "backwards compatible" with ASCII because, if you read in a series of UTF-32 characters, 3 out of 4 bytes will be $00. Where the zeros show up depend upon the byte ordering (Big-endian vs Little-endian).
