Some machine shops have magnetic degausers. You could probably use one of those.

Not many companies do that anymore. iomega usually ships out a new drive to you before you ship the broken one out to them. Looking through a harddrive takes so much time and it would cost the company much money, instead of just trowing it out or sending it to China for refurbishment.

The magnets might not erase the data, but it can damage the internal parts so that it won't spin. XD  But that won't stop someone from being able to access the data if they really wanted to get it.  Those data recovery places retrieve data from dead drives all the time.
