British vs American part 1-Do you know the difference?
Показать описание
British English and American English-is there really so much difference?
There are many differences between British and American English. Sometimes you might hear the difference in a movie (where there are two leading actors, one speaking in British and one in American English, as it is in ,,Notting Hill’’ 1999, for example) and sometimes you can see it when reading an article (BBC writes differently than New York Times, for instance). Why is it?
People speaking British and American English pronounce and stress words differently (they have different accents), write differently (spelling differences), use slightly different grammar structures and, what is probably the most important, use different vocabulary. And this is all while speaking technically the same language, English.
In the UK, there are around 60 million English speakers, in the USA- more than 320 million. But the British variety of English is much older, it has its origins in the Old English, dating back to year ca. 450, while the American English only started developing in the 17th century.
