In this video we take a brief look at NPN BJT transistors. Is it a switch, or is at an amplifier? It can be either...

Really good transistor tutorial. Now about PNP transistors? Thanks for the video.

I'm going to view your MOSFET video shortly but this was a great introduction. Like another commentor mentioned, this can be tough to grasp. Correct me if I'm wrong but (...something that confused me for a while...) saying a transistor as an amplifier is a bit misleading, in the sense that it doesn't create power from nothing. The *source* of the amplification is not the transistor but the higher voltage *supplied* to the collector. The transistor just allows that higher current to flow. Do I have that right?

Sitting next to my girl, I laughed out loud at the PN junction joke

So the current at the collector divided by the current flowing into the base gives the current gain of the transistor?

I'm waiting for the MOSFETs! I understand them better every time I watch a good video.. but I really need help picking a good FET. the data sheets really get complicated. the more I read the mor questions I have. is there a MOSFETs for Dummies book? great video

Great video as always! Looking forward to the video on MOSFETs! What about an introduction to op-amps as well?

on the Transistor as a switch part can you explain how what is goin on is different than just having the same circuit without the transistor? It seems that if you change the wire from ground to power the LED will light with or without the transistor, likewise with the potentiometer it would get brighter with or without the transistor.

Good thing you didn’t ask the nurse if she knew the location of your PN junction or she may have given you her version of a polarity probe!

Good explanation. Air conditioning! Wow! Not hot here I'm afraid!

So if you wanted to, could you make a transistor out of 2 diodes

Not a criticism since the explanation is the standard one in most books. But I used to really struggle with this explanation of how a transistor works since it didn't make sense to me given that its basically like two diodes back to back. (I delved deeper now and I got it). What I struggled to comprehend was how does current flowing from base to the emitter enable current to flow in the "reverse bias diode" of the collector and base junction. So if you can do a follow up with that part in more detail I think it would help people understand why you can't make a transistor by simply connecting two diodes back to back!
