I'm Pole living in Poland long enough to remember ruZZian occupation. So apart from apparent historical context, I have a first-hand experience with "ruZZki mir." What is this experience about? ruZZia is, was, and will be a country, state, and nation struggling with structural problems that were not addressed for centuries. I mean, since the Mongol's invasion in ~ the XIII century - practical dictatorship and slavery, unlimited expansion eastward, and a general mental setup to steal and conquer rather than invent and build. If one calls it xenophobia, I call it ruZZia-realism. The only language this "state" understands is the language of brute force. You see it day by day in Ukraine.

There is $14 trillion in oil, gas, and gold under Ukraine. Plus pipeline to dump the oil and gas directly into Europe

By the same logic, Russia belongs to Mongolia. 🤣

So most of the reasons I already knew. Ukraine was the Soviet Unions biggest arms producer along with all that technical & scientific knowledge. Something that is very obvious in this war.

Mineral rights and he did not want to pay transit fees for his gas going through pipelines in Ukraine anymore. End of story. It’s money.

It was never about NATO, otherwise Russia would have attacked Finland when they said they were joining NATO. And if anyone still thinks it is, the border between Russia and Finland is LESS defended by Russia since Finland became a NATO member than it was before they joined.

Putin does not want an economically thriving society in a democratic county that borders on Russia. Russia's kleptocracy has resulted in an elite oligarcy claiming the vast wealth of Russia while it's average citizens live in abject poverty. The Kremlin does not want a prosperous democracy in a former member of the Soviet Union because average Russians would wonder why they remain so empoverished compared to Ukraine. This disparity could result in a movement to overthrow Russia's current corupt government, threatening Putin's dictatorship.

Russia: "due to economic collapse of the 1990s and people leaving our population is down to 137 million people in 2022 and our demographics for the future suck!"
Putin: " How about I start a war and cause even more of the population to leave or die?"
Russia: "You are a brilliant strategist arent you?"

Controlling Ukraine would give Russia massive power and influence in Africa that depends on cheap grain. Africa is where all them lovely rare metal deposits are. I reckon a big part of it is control of Africa. Just look at what Wagner have been up to.

We need to give Karelia and the rest of Russian Scandinavia back to Finland, or create a new Lapland state.. Give Siberia back to the Natives and Return former Japanese islands back to Japan..

putin believed all those memes we made of him before the war... he thought he really rode a brown bear with his chest naked and that stalimium was a real thing.

It is important to note that Muscovite Russia’s historic claim to Crimea is even more tenuous than its claim to Ukraine. Crimea’s attachment has historically been more linked to Byzantium and later the Ottoman sphere of influence than Russia’s.

Its because Ukraine is unbelievably rich in raw resources like minerals and energy. As well as very rich farmland. It was the center of Soviet innovation and arms production. Very few countries tick all the boxes like Ukraine does.

The real reason for Putin to annex Ukraine is the gas reserves found in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine was developing these and would therefore become a major competitor for the European gas market. No war is waged without economic reasons

As a finnish person, I've long been xenophobic towards Russia. The Ukraine war didn't help that xenophobia and even now I have problems seeing russians as people worthy of trust. Of course I understand that it is not the people I should hate, its Putin and his regime.
The stupid part is that I've never actually spoken to someone from russia. I've heard people speak russian, but never have I had reason to talk to them.
I just wait for the day when there are enough ethnically russian people here to somewhat justify to make russian an official language in Finland. For context, swedish is mandatory language just due to small part of the population being ethnically swedish people in some parts. I don't speak a speck of swedish even though I was taught that in school.

A good analysis of the situation. A further point is that due to its falling population, Russia would not have the man power to stage the invasion in the future. It was now or never. As a result of his huge losses, Putin won't be able to have a second shot.

Putin’s logic makes zero sense. All lands belonged to different people over time, with completely different forms of government, ethnic makeup, and cultural identity.

Most of the Russian territories belonged to a totally different set of people with different ethnic backgrounds until the formation of the Soviet state and the great famine forced massive starvation, forced relocation, and elimination of many ethnic groups.

This is also like saying Greece and Italy have the right to take over everything in most of Europe and even parts of the Russian federation because the Roman Empire once occupied these lands and culturally influenced them. Or that the Mongolian people should now occupy the majority of Siberia, parts of the Baltic, all of China, and Japan.

Sorry those Empires and Kingdom’s existed and they fell, and new forms of government and people developed since then.

I could see this argument being logical if it only happened 5-10 years ago and they were fighting for unification most of that time. But no, the Ukrainian people got independence 33 years ago and had been culturally divergent from Russia for almost 2 decades prior to that.

Sorry Putin the USSR is not coming back, and you have already torn apart a lot of the Russian Federation and oblasts politically in the process.
