The way they treated Khalil is the same way the British colonial empire treated the natives of the countries they colonized; they gave token positions to a few natives and implemented authoritarian control from the top, as soon one of the natives started to protest the British oppression they were disappeared, imprisoned or executed and replaced with more willing vassals.
