The bad part is that the application process is very demanding and complex yet most govt employees that I know (many) got in because they knew someone and most are sub par candidates and they would admit it. Moral of the lesson, bust your ass and apply with all kind of tricks while the person who knows someone inside will get in (less qualified) and you will be rejected. I have known this situation with many people. Worked with enough GS 11-15 who in a normal corporate job would be fired due to poor performance yet get cushy govt jobs all because they have someone on the inside.
