Caribbean American here who grew up around Patois, Ebonics, standard English and Spanish and Spanglish. I considered Ebonics a language or dialect especially because it has its own consistent grammar and syntax structure and conjugations that mimics conventional language— so much so you can tell when someone is not a “native speaker” or not speaking it properly (and there’s a proper way to speak it), just as if you would for any other language. BUT I can also see it as a dialect because a dialect is a way of speaking a particular language specific to a region or group. Ebonics is a form of standard English, just as patios is a mix of creole and English and so on, specific to Black Americans. And just as it’s inappropriate for non Caribbeans to speak Patois, it would be inappropriate for non Black people to speak Ebonics. Idk that’s a tough one
