How Channing Tatum's Gambit Made A Name For Himself

A proper live action version of X-Men's Gambit has been in the works for over a decade. The few that we've gotten in the likes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine have been disappointing to say the least. When Channing Tatum's solo outing as Gambit was shelved by Disney, it seemed like we'd never see Remy LeBeau properly adapted. But when Deadpool & Wolverine debuted, fans were surprised to see Channing Tatum donning the iconic Gambit costume. Will this be the last we see of Gambit in the MCU? I don't think so, but only time will tell how the fan favorite X-Men will return.

Gambit really did make a name for himself

It's amazing what actually being passionate for a subject or character can do to make a difference in how it turns out.

I mean with Ryan Reynolds fighting so hard to bring Deadpool to the screen in the "right" way it makes PERFECT sense that he would give Channing Tatum a similar chance.

Tatum's Gambit works for the same reason every other live-action adaptation of a superhero has worked: the studio, director, and actor actually lean into the character and aren't ashamed to be making a superhero film. Taking superheroes seriously doesn't necessarily mean shaving away everything that seems unrealistic or campy. Even a film as gritty and grounded and no-nonsense as "The Batman" still has to feature three of its main characters running around their city dressed as their favorite animals.

Hope that isn’t the last we see of him, a heist film would be amazing

I loved how meta his lines were. "Do you know how long I've waited for this?!" "I'm going to make a name for myself here!" "y'all best tell everyone what happened here today!"

My mom is also a new orleans native, when we watched deadpoolXwolverine I didn't tell her about gambit I just asked her if she can tell where he's from after his first line and she was SO EXCITED to hear such a legit Cajun accent! Then I did the lore dump hehe

In 5th grade, each student got a single 6X6 inch tile that we could paint ANYTHING we wanted and it would be baked in a kiln and then put up on one of the hallway walls forever to represent my class. I painted Gambit throwing a card. He's been my #1 favorite X-Men since I was 10 years old!!!

Edit: I just recently visited my old elementary school and I saw my original tile with Gambit still up on the wall!!!

Gambit's coming out party in Deadpool and Wolverine was so great because he was great. Tatum finally got to show us all what he's been trying to do for years, and the movie lets him shine. He's funny, but aside from light ribbing, he's not the butt of the joke. He's a legit badass and holds his own in the fight. I don't know how younger audience members perceived him, but knowing how long Channing Tatum has been trying to do something with this character, it was really great to see how they realized it.

Channing Tatum is hilarious and I really like that he doesn't take himself his cameos are THE BEST part of many movies

I hate to say but seeing this and the Blade cameo is what finally broke me and made me buy a ticket. I’m a 90s kid in my early 30s now so it was the perfect nostalgia bait they could have laid out for me.

You have no idea how long he's been waiting for this!

I had no idea that Channing Tatum had been fighting for Gambit for as long as he did. But as soon as he stepped into that doorway in D&W, you just knew he embodied the character and there was a backstory there.

Just like how Ryan Reynolds fought for years to get Deadpool to be made.

Channing Tatum's Gambit is not only a pinnacle of the character itself, but a monument to how every super hero film should be handled.

Loved him as Gambit as it was as if a long unachievable dream, finally beared fruit.

What I also liked about Gambit's inclusion in Deadpool & Wolverine is the understanding that, in the multiverse, even the projects that never got off the ground have a chance to become something, which is a fact that the movie itself acknowledges in its tongue and cheek fashion, in addition to paying homage to dormant 20th Century Fox franchises. Just as Ryan Reynolds is a perfect fit for Deadpool, Channing Tatum really proved he was the perfect fit for Gambit (or at the very least, far more convincing than the other guy), all because they have passion for the roles they're playing and understand the characters through and through.

Cajun here. His accent was spot on, and while I think it might be hard for everyone else to understand if he gets his own movie, I could understand perfectly.

Channing Tatum is a fantastic actor; no matter the role, he is always enjoyable to watch, from comedy to serious, he never lets you down. I absolutely loved him in Deadpool & Wolverine as Gambit and look forward to more from him in this role.

That's the second time Channing Tatum made a name for himself in Internet memedom using a foreign accent, and I kinda hope there'll be a third.
