This boss hit me in the feels for 3 reasons. 1. The second phase piano. 2. He had the same moveset as gwyn. And the soul of cinder is your character from dark souls 1

If you really think about it, the latter half of this fight is just Gwyn breaking forward in a last desperate attempt to undo his mistakes.

When Gwyn first extended the age of fire he knew that he was the reason the undead curse wrought the land and he slowly withered away to nothing but a hollow shell as he watched the world decay around him. He guarded the flame with the intent of never letting hit go out or fall into the wrong hands in the hope that this curse he inflicted on the land would end.

And when he failed to stop the Chosen Undead he had to again watch for centuries as the flame was linked over and over in a futile effort to extend the life of the world, to its own detriment.

And now in these last moments, seeing it all happen over again, he couldn’t help but break forward, and lead one last helpless assault to finally ensure that the world would rest in peace. In fact, when the second phase begins and SoC bursts into flames, you could almost imagine Gwyn letting out a thunderous “ENOUGH!” Before doing everything in his power to kill you, the hapless, misguided player.

I feel bad for the soul of cinder as he is the embodiment of all those who linked the flame in this pointless effort to stop darkness and the abyss. It's always an emotional fight if you've played all the souls games.

It's the years and years of desperation, a constant fight against you and what tries to kill you. You see everyone fall at your bare feet, but you keep on going after seeing how painful and soulless the real world can be, how legends and heroes down and villains rise. it's not about the fight, it's against everything you were designated to do, but still you don't know after all of this you came across and faced what to finally do. Your still don't know what decision to make, let everyone fell but libarate them or just convert yourself into what you promised to finally destoy.

I only have to say EXCELENT WORK FROM SOFFWARE, you will be always remembered in my heart deep at the bottom.

i like the theory that soul of cinder, an almagamation of all the lords including gwyn himself, is guarding the first flame only to let it fade, since they all saw what horrors trying to re-link it brought upon the world and its people, so the soul of cinder tries to stop anyone trying to do it until the flame completly fades or until it absorbs so much souls of lords that it becomes an invincible, unstopable force, making impossible for anyone to get past it

Funny story:

I was facing Soul of Cinder, headphones out of my PS4, and my wife walked up and heard this shift, and saw me crying. She asked me why, and I asked her if she remembered the Gwyn fight (she saw me fight him too). She smiled and patted me on the shoulders and said "finish him"
