In Dark Souls 1 you fight the creator of a kingdom.
In Dark Souls 2 you fight the destroyer of a kingdom.
In Dark Souls 3 you fight the remnants of a kingdom.

Everyone knows about Gwyn's Plin Plin Plon in Phase 2, but nobody ever seems to have noticed that the opening notes of Phase 1 are the same notes as Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls 1.

When John Darksoulsman said "you've plinned your last plon" before the final strike tears were shed

one thing I realy like, is that this song is like a fire.
A flame starts, grows, then slowly fades and dies

I beat Dark Souls 3 before 1, (in just the past month or so) but I know people went crazy when the reprisal of Gwyns theme kicked in. Made me cry when I realized Gwyn, even after all this time, still wants to protect the first flame. Dark Souls is the first series of games that really made me cry and feel bad for what I’m doing.

After seeing the soul of cinder switch into so many forms to protect the first flame, in their final act to do it when in danger. It reflects where it all began, Gwyn the first lord of cinder and probably the stronger. That started the cycle, and gave everything he had to maintaing the flame alive...

The first phase part of this song gives that common feeling of the start of the final fight, that feeling that reminds you that everything you’ve done has led up to this, and that it’s time to either win, or go down swinging. But then the second phase part of this song gives off this feeling of pointlessness. This feeling that no matter who wins at the end of the fight, it’s going to change nothing. No matter how hard you fight, this world is going to fade into nothing. A battle of two nobodies over nothing, in the middle of nowhere, with the reward of nothing. A completely pointless battle that just reminds you more and more of how useless everything you’ve done, are doing, and will do is. And god fucking damn does it hit like a truck when you realize this.

Gwyn's theme, wonderfull... Damn, all of this conveys a feeling from the beginning.

Everyone raves on Gwyn's theme in phase 2, but personally I like the phase 1 music more, it's so epic

that music is one of the best of the souls series

This just goes to show you just how impactful music can be, especially paired with the environment and boss fight. Everything in your journey led you to this moment, and the previous people who linked the flame do everything in their power to stop you.

I fought this guy for the first time yesterday... wow. I had heard a few things about the fight but still...
That ending, too, the flame, so small and meagre.

I wish I could have my reaction to phase 2 recorded somewhere... Just, wow...

.... Yup, Phase 2 opening still hits me like a freight train. Good to know.
