In this episode, We will discuss in detail What will Happen if China Overtakes the US in AI?
China has risen to become one of the largest economies in the world. The country of 1.4 billion people was primarily an agricultural economy until only a few decades back. This is the same country that suffered through one of the worst famine crises in history from 1959 to 1961 during Chairman Mao's Great Leap Forward. Yet, a combination of liberalized economic policies under Deng Xiaoping resulted in the meteoric rise of the country, which experienced double-digit growth rates year on year throughout the 2010s.
Currently, the country has set its eyes upon the field of technology. China is already a powerhouse in terms of economic and regional hegemony. In terms of cutting-edge technological innovations, the country still lags behind the United States in many areas. This, however, could be a thing of the past as Chinese policymakers are adamant about winning the technological race. Already, China has overtaken the United States in AI journal citations. According to the Verge in 2021, China’s AI publications increased by 34.5 percent between 2019 to 2020. Based on current trends, China may also surpass the United States in terms of quality and not just quantity. By 2025, China could produce the top one percent of most-cited AI papers, according to AI2 Blog in 2019. Currently, China has about half of America’s AI firms, but they are catching up quickly. In some domains, China is already ahead of the United States, such as speech recognition where China’s iFlytek takes the top spot for voice recognition.
The race for AI technology
The US is unquestionably the leader when it comes to information technology. The country leads due to its constant investment in research and developing new techniques. The internet, GPS, and all other major technologies originated from the US. The country has one of the best infrastructures to support technological advancement. However, the Chinese are taking stock of the situation and actively taking steps to advance their technological development. Among the areas of interest, the development of Artificial Intelligence is front and center. Chinese policymakers have introduced reforms to encourage and facilitate research and development. They have set a target of surpassing the US in developing AI by the year 2030, an ambitious plan which, according to many experts, may just be possible considering the leaps and bounds made by China in AI in recent years. China has a huge advantage in terms of the data it can produce with its huge population and weak data protection.
The consequences of a Chinese AI takeover
Since the probability of China overtaking the US in AI development is not far-fetched, especially taking into account the country's history of making remarkable progress due to sheer determination and strict reforms, it is important to assess the potential impact of this possibility.
If China trumps the AI game, here are a few things we can expect:
The new military superpower
If we go back in recent history, the only country that truly threatened the US's sovereignty over world politics was the USSR. The two countries were engaged in a series of proxy wars, which combined were known as the Cold War. The US ultimately won due to better geopolitical strategic alliances and superior technology. China is now in a position to challenge the US as a world power. It is already a strong economic and political rival. Developing its AI capability before the US will also make it technologically superior. China may very well be the next great military superpower as a result. Ironically, prior to 2017, the main supplier of commercial drones for the US Army was a Chinese drone manufacturer called DJI. AI produces enormous military advantages due to its superior precision and ability to rationally assess a crisis without emotion. Analyzing trillions of data points could allow China’s military to effectively anticipate America’s next defensive or offensive move, which would essentially neutralize US strategic advantages. In turn, AI superiority could give China the ability to effectively end America’s role as the global hegemon.
