What If F1 Cars Were Front Wheel Drive?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a Formula 1 car was front-wheel-drive? Well, wonder no more, as John conducts a little experiment…

Using Assetto Corsa, we’ve reversed the driven axles in an F1 single-seater, with all of the glorious V6 turbo hybrid power being fed to the front wheels. Think of it as a Ferrari SF70H touring car – God forbid Maranello made a vehicle with such a compromised drivetrain layout!*

Watch as John wrestles the understeering beast around Mugello and then against the AI. Let us know in the comments below if you’d like to see more Assetto Corsa weirdness on the channel.

*Yes, the Ferrari SF90 can be driven in front-wheel-drive electric mode, clever clogs.

Generally more understeery car should be easier to drive so this could be better for newbies actually 😅

The solution is 2-part, yet simple:
1) clutch-type Limited-Slip Differential for torque vectoring
2) adjust the front-tor-rear downforce distribution by reducing the rear wing's influence
Not particularly difficult. Also, typing this roughly 6 minutes in.
Edit: or, you could use a Spool Diff in place of the LSD, if you disengage the inside wheel during each corner.

The static weight distribution for a FWD should also be different. And the bigger tires should probably go on the front, along with a larger rear wing and diffuser to take up the extra space available at the rear. Y'know, like the Nissan FWD LMP car that WOULD have been a success if they ironed out the bugs.

What do you mean ""don't want to turn and brake at the same time as the tyres I'm asking way too much of them" your front locking diff should help you trail brake into corners harder than a RWD, not only that you could even at times use part throttle, and to somewhat pull yourself out of a corner

atleast you can't spin it anymore

you think only the wheels that steer experience lateral forces? absolutely clueless. the less overall grip is mainly weight transfer

Nissan LMP1 anyone? :D

FWD is a terrible idea in racing, you can't rotate the car on throttle as deftly and when acceleration forces pull the car backwards, the weight shifts away from the front giving you even less traction.

Would like to see the same mod though with attention put into the setup and the rear tyres on the front and visa versa just to prove how the LMP1 Nissan just wouldn't have worked.
