Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the Early Muslim Expansion and Medieval history continues with a video on the beginning of the Arab-Khazar wars, as we discuss the early history of the Khazars in the context of their relationship with the Huns, Bulgars, Byzantines, Sassanids and others, as well as how the Muslim Caliphate and Khazar Khanate became enemies. In this video will talk about the First and Second Arab-Khazar War and the first and second sieges of Balanjar, as well as the battles of Marj Ardabil and Mosul and will tell how the Khazars adopted Judaism, becoming one of the first Jewish kingdoms outside of the Levant. We will also talk about the fall of the Khazar Khaganate at the hand of the Rus prince Sviatoslav and his Oghuz and Pecheneg mercenaries.

Interesting. Not a people I knew anything about. They tend to get overshadowed by their more famous neighbors, but super important for a while.

In Turkish, the name of the Caspian Sea translates to "Hazar Denizi" (Khazar Sea)🙂
Thank you for another great video K&G 😇
P.S: 01:48 It was great to see my name on the map (Oguz)!

The Khazars were a Turkic people, they were led by the Ashina clan, a clan of Göktürk origin. The Khazar people spoke an Oghuric language like the Bulgars, the Sabirs or the Onoghurs, while the ruling elite spoke a Common Turkic language like the Göktürks or the Uyghurs.

In the far west, one group of the Bulghar tribes defeated by the Khazars migrated to the Balkans (c. 679), subjugated some sedentary Slavic tribes, and established a state there, eventually assimilating to their more numerous subjects.16 Another group of Bulghars withdrew to the north, settled in the Middle Volga region and coalesced Middle Volga region and coalesced with the local, sedentary, Finnic-speaking tribes into another state.17 In this case, the Turkic language prevailed. The only exception to the almost complete predominance of European steppes in the second half of the first millennium were the Magyars (Hungarians).

Great content! Special thanks for the accurate mapping of north Black sea lands and eastern Europe. Usually, historical channels do stereotypical mistakes there blindly relying on russian psedo-historical fantasy lore. But your one looks way more adequate!

Thank you for another excellent and informative video. I would quite enjoy future videos on the Caucasus, Black Sea, and Caspian Sea regions! I don't know a great deal about those regions beyond snapshots of specific periods.
God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)

The Turkic Khaganate that figured out how to survive the Abrahamic religion filled politics of Eurasia, keeping their own identity and not being bound to relgious organizations.

Amazing how such a change in fortunes could occur to the Kazars and what is now a footnote in history could have been pivotal had things been just a little different.

Loved this video. Thanks so much. The changing maps and time periods you provide with the coinciding war and political events help make sense of the general regional history I am familiar with.

The word "Khazar" derived from the word "Qasar, Gezer" which means "to roam, to ramble" in Turkic languages.

Video idea: The Khazars and Judaism but also the Khazar hypothesis of Ashkenazi ancestry.
