I have always canned, bargain hunted, cooked from scratch and used about all the tricks in the book. I've stretched every nickel. Not much more to do but pray!

Plan your meals around sale items and stock up on them. That way you eat out of your freezer and watch for sales to return. Always check the reduced sections and don't go to the store without having ate.

I use the Walmart pick up! That way I don't have to go in the store and buy $50 more than I was planning. Saves time and money! 😁

I check grocery ads each week and write down the sale items I want, then try to meal plan around those items. I grocery shop in the mornings so I can check the new clearance meats out and get first pick of those. I combine coupons with sales. And I shop based on getting extra fuel points so we get huge gas discounts every time we fill up (usually get $1 off per gallon at least twice a month) - shop on the days when they give bonus points, and buy gift cards therw for other places I'm going to shop ag anyway (Amazon, Lowe's, etc.) because they give double and sometimes quadruple points for gift cards.

I’m on a fixed income and I have $300/month spending money. This generally means that I have ten dollars a day spending money. So, I play a little game with myself where I try to get the amount of money per day by the end of the month is as much as I can make it be. The extra money gets put away for things that I could use but don’t have in the budget. I ride an electric bicycle as my only means of transportation, even in the winter in the Catskill Mountains. I’ve been able to buy three extra batteries and hydraulic brakes with this extra money. Now I can ride up to eighty miles in one day. However, if you ride bike you know that I generally won’t go that far because its painful in the behind lol. But, theoretically I could ride eighty miles in one day at a cost of $2.32 in electricity. I now feel bad for the people at the gas station while they feel bad for me in cold weather.

I've always cooked from scratch, bought in bulk and shopped the sales. When I find really good sales, I can and dehydrate the surplus. After we move onto our micro-homestead, we'll have a garden and chickens.

I have shopped per oz. Since I was a teenager and did the shopping for my mother. Also, when I plan my menu for the week, I look at the flyers to see what is on sale...Especially, meats and the veggies I haven't mastered growing yet. I also have a standard grocery list I use hanging up in my kitchen. I just highlight the things I need as I use them. That way, when I am at home or the store there isn't any need to think about what I need to restock...example, baking soda, baking powder, flour, condiments and different pastas. I also try to do all my errands downtown in one day in a circular pattern to save on gas between stores.

My grocery store sells a small amount of very expensive organic chicken breasts along with the full assortment of regular chicken meat. Due to the significantly higher price not many people buy the organic chicken and then it stays in the store longer. But because all meat expires, I note the expiration date on the current display of organic chicken packages, show up at the store on the day before it expires, and at that point the same chicken is often tagged as a special sale at a reduced price because it's going to expire as of the next day and the store wants to sell it rather than throw it away at a loss. At that point, I buy some of the reduced organic chicken, take it home, cut it up as necessary, and cook it all immediately. Once cooked, it lasts quite a few days longer, can be used for various recipes, and I've gotten the best quality chicken I can obtain at a reduced price. I also try to look at eating more wholesome foods as an investment in my health that helps reduce healthcare expenses in the long run.

I've been doing this for years. My pantry is large & varied enough that I don't have to go to the store but once a month & spend under $100. When I cook I double it & freeze the extra. Cool once & eat for a lot longer, like with spaghetti sauce, I freeze half of it for later

In Oct. 2019 I realized I could no longer walk around a grocery store and started ordering from Walmart and doing curbside pickup. I can bet I have saved more than $500. since because I'm not picking up stuff that "looks good". I do try once every couple months to go pick out meats - but that is the only time I go in.

Jasmine rice cooked with fresh tomatoes and onions and your favorite seasonings. A portion of rice is healthy and will stretch your meals. Have a portion of rice and some vegtables ( green beans, asparagus, brussel sprouts, corn, peas, beans, potatoes, etc ) and buy good quality meat ( ribeye ) and cut smaller portions. For example two people can eat one steak if it is sliced thin strips. Sear the sides and get a medium crust on both sides and then cut in thin strips and if its not done enough then put it back in the hot skillet for less than a minute stiring around the meat. Have a plate ready and pour the meat and juices on a plate and let it rest. I have found using soy sauce makes a good marinade for tenderizing steak. Tenderize the meat after marinading. Take your knife and stab poking a bunch of holes in the steak. The sear will hold the juices in. Get a head of lettuce and you can make a salads with hard boiled eggs. Eat a salad and a smaller dinner.

Thank you for speaking on this. The way I was taught was to buy two of most things I need. Two chickens go to a large soup pot and get cooked 3/4 of the way. Then put in a roaster with lots of veggies for the last part very low and slow. Now I have over 7 quarts of double strength broth and added broth from the roasting with veggies for added meals. Like pot pies, soups, meat sauce ext. It lasts a month for me.

I have completey changed my shopping habbits, I stock up with azure standard the first 3 months of the year and buy meat locally and I cook from scratch, then I may go once a month to pick up a few things, the garden and chickens help, making my own bread and pasta and home canning helps me save a ton of money, and I save my bones in the freezer until I have time to make bone stock, you may think that you do not have time but it is pretty easy, takes maybe 5 minutes to mix up some bread dough that will keep in the fridge for 2 weeks, then it is there when you need it. It is super easy to make your own tortillas, just a cpl tbl spoons of oil, some water and a little salt, they may not turn out perfectly round but you are making them for pennies over what you spend at the store, mayo literally takes seconds to make and 4 ingredients, you can make your own convience foods, I just had my last sausage egg and cheese buiscut today, got some time off tomorrow so I'm gonna make up some breakfast and dinnner burittos

We go early and check the markdown meat. Still chicken or pork and always plan around multiple uses for whatever meat we buy. Right now we're buying marked down turkeys and deboning when we get home. Then we use the meat the same as we would chicken. And the bones... or what lovely stock we have put up.

You are so right about not going on an empty stomach. My husband and I have been married 34 yrs and have 3 grown married kids. We learned that many moons ago when our kids were little and to this day we always eat before we go grocery shopping.

I have been thinking about this because today I had to get groceries. However, my son did the shopping off my list which prevents me from any impulse buying. I always go with the cheapest price I can get on each product, unless the cheapest isn’t a product my family likes. Being on a disability income makes it so I have to watch my spending in order to make sure my bills are all paid and there’s food on the table. When my parents were alive and they had a Sam’s Club membership, we’d go halves on stuff we both wanted. That helped both families save money. Also, buying family packs for our family of two when they’re on sale and then I would come home and split it into smaller portions and either use freezer ziplock bags or re-wrap in freezer paper. I also buy the larger size cheese and cut it into smaller useable portions and freeze it so it doesn’t go bad. Great video! God bless!

Eating before going grocery shopping is definitely the ticket and making sure to have a grocery list. Without the grocery list to follow I’m full.. and don’t feel like buying groceries 😊

I agree with you on everything. When you mentioned common sense, I had to smile because unfortunately common sense isn’t very common anymore.

Shopping when hungry is a BIG no no! Great reminder! Also, hard not to impulse buy this time of year!
