Why Is Google Struggling In Russia? Yandex

While Google has about 90% of the global market share for internet search, it is lagging behind in Russia, where the homegrown company Yandex has captured 55% of the market. Yandex maintains its dominance due to its superior Russian language search capabilities, its wide array of services beyond search, and the company's willingness to comply with the country's often restrictive local laws.

In all corners of the world, if you're looking to do an internet search, chances are high that Google is your go-to. But Google's domination hasn't extended everywhere, and Russia is one of the few countries where it lags behind. Here, 55% of the market belongs to the homegrown company Yandex.

Like Google, Yandex is so much more than a search engine. It offers email, cloud, and online payment services, streaming music, news aggregatio, and live traffic maps. Yandex.Taxi merged with Uber last year, and it is testing self-driving cars.

Basically, Yandex sure sounds a lot like Google. So why do the majority of Russia's 144.5 million citizens actually prefer it?

It is not "struggling". It is popular, and Yandex is too. Since when "not being a monopolist" is "struggling"?

Most of the Russian don’t even use Facebook, they mostly used Vk.

Moreover here in Russia we have a strong competition between mutiple internet providers, while in many European countries and USA it's a monopoly. That's considered to be one of the reason that internet in Russia is very cheap and high-quality.

I'm from Russia and this is weird for me that for example such huge European countries like UK, Germany, France has no own search engines or similar company as Yandex.. Why do you allow Google to be monopolist in your countries? Google, Facebook and even Amazon are already dominates as internet services in your countries. Maybe there is some small alternatives, but no real competition for these giants at all.
As an IT specialist I prefer Google for my professional searches, but I happy that we have quite strong alternatives in our country. Because some Google services are just terrible, for example Maps, Yandex and 2Gis are much better than Google.

No, it's not "Crazyfont", who said that ? That's TRANSLIT ( транслит ). Crazyfont ( абракадабра ) is when ur codepage doesn't match, and u see just some letters without any meaning.

i cant stop laughing when she say "champion of freedom information", while google deliberately censoring the truth for the higher bidder.

For me as a Russian user of both engines, Google is much better for technical topics. Yandex is good at other services, such as searches for what happens in your town, where to watch a movie, to what restaurant to go. In this sence, Yandex really knows its audience.

Isn't Yandex also a taxi company? Because we literally have Yandex taxi cars here in Lithuania.

Let me say smth as Russian. First of all, on most phones that come to our country officially, there is yandex search in browser by default. Secondly, we use their services much more than google's just because they are better, especially maps service - google maps are total disaster for Russian. Even weather service is sometimes more accurate. Taxi is of course popular but many people also use yandex's music streaming service and their affiche service for films, concerts and theatre events. Their ecosystem is good and too comfortable for russian just like google for american.
Honestly, we don't feel if google needs to push forward in Russia, believe me, their services are not getting better.

People should avoid American tech companies as far as possible as they are the extended arms of American intelligence agencies and foreign policy establishments.

It is good to see Russians have managed to avoid Google.

In India, we don't have the similar option as Indian InfoTech companies are mainly interested in service sector and software developments for foreign clients. If there is good Indian alternative, people will go for that.

Also India needs to have it's own international news channel like BBC, RT, CGTN and VOA.

This video is talking about Russian control of internet for it's content in a negative fashion.

It feels hypocritical as the United States has done the same thing with sopa and pipa.

No, the control isn't good, but neither is acting like it's an isolated event.

Edit:
Google is also looking into ways of editing out unsavory content according to government opinions.

This sounds like it's Google's propaganda against it's main competitor in Russia.

When I started watching I knew it will end up pinning the blame on Putin for Google's failure to be a better product. and OMG! I was right!
