"White-hat hackers" are also called "software testers" and they've existed since computers were invented. The only difference here is they are independent contractors instead of full-time employees -- so they don't get paid unless they find errors.

It’s like money: you can either use it for evil or good.

As an entrepreneur, I would LOVE only paying software testers on a performance basis.. No HR, no benefits, no fuss.. Seems like a win win for Enterprise..

The penalties for hacking are disproportionately harsh.

I’m surprised at the amount of ignorant comments here. Would you rather incentivize people to find and report vulnerabilities so you can fix it, or just leave it until someone actually breaks in and cause harm.

They're not paying enough for most to disclose security flaws. For most in the west you can't even make a proper living that way.

in a big picture it doesn't seem to be in their interest to fully protect companies from hacking

To be a hacker is to be one of the best specialist in the field. This is why they pay so much.
In every domain of activity the first 1% of specialists are paid a lot of money.
It is not about hacking, is about specialisation and expertise.

So long as there are computers, there will be somebody smart enough to hack into them. They have to have a back door to get into them or you would never be able to fix them when broken.

Google isn't the company it used to be in regards to software. Android and chrome are bloated messes with a lot of vulnerabilities that go unpatched. As they expanded as a company, the software people became a minority in the company.
