Why Google, Microsoft, and Apple Are Fighting For Classrooms

Google, Microsoft and Apple are battling for dominance in classrooms. They all want their devices in the hands of the next generation of consumers.

The U.S. education-tech market is expected to hit $43 billion this year, with much of the growth coming in K-12 education, according to a study by Technavio.

Apple used to have the most devices in U.S. schools, but Google soared to the top after the release of the Chromebook in 2011. In 2018, Chromebooks made up 60 percent of all laptops and tablets purchased for U.S. K-12 classrooms, up from just 5 percent in 2012. Microsoft is second at 22 percent, followed by Apple, with 18 percent of shipments to U.S. schools in 2018, according to data from Futuresource Consulting.

Google has a majority of the U.S. education tech market largely because Chromebooks are so affordable. But Apple and Microsoft are making moves to try to change that.

Watch the video to learn how Apple and Microsoft are making moves to change that.

I worked in K12 tech for 6+ years. I can assure you that Apple told us that the education market was not a priority for them. Google was BY FAR the most engaged in helping education institutions - they developed G Suite for Education which is fantastic, the chromebooks are cheap, work great, and less fragile than iPads. The biggest issue we had with apple products is that you have to use device based management instead of user based management and the fact that you HAVE to use Apples terrible Apple Configurator to provision the devices and then use a 3rd party MDM to manage them. Google > Microsoft > Apple ....I'm not an apple hater...but this is the consensus from my experience and the experiences of the 40 or so people that I know that do the same job in K12.

Does anyone else not know how to feel about this? Tablets would have been miracles for learning biology, math, and Khan Academy. Still, this just exemplifies the education gap in the US and makes me feel terrible for students who can barely afford school supplies.

Stick a kid infront of a camera and they'll never say anything negative. Trust me. Even adults don't

Can't relate to any of this. As a senior at a public high school, we've never had iPads or chromebooks. You go to a computer lab, or use the library computers. It's nice because the newer desktops are powerful, but there's so few available and many of the older ones don't work at all.

From a student, this is an accurate representation of the current situation. My PUBLIC school actually has iPads oddly enough (I can explain if anybody wants an explanation).

At my school we use no technology except once a week in the computer lab which just updated their computers to windows 10.

My public middle school and high school uses chromebooks for every student. We have to take them home in High school and charge them. I think this is good because this teaches responsibility and if it isn’t charged then I guess you can’t work.

My school couldn’t even afford an English teacher for my senior year.

Ironic that some, if not all, of these CEOs raised their children without tech devices.

3:07 - that is not the iPad Air! That is the iPad Pro and it starts at $799 and can go to well over $2000 with options and accessories.
