Following a coup d'etat against Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi and her government at the start of 2021, Western countries have reimposed targeted financial sanctions against their military leaders, family members and business interests. However, the military junta is no stranger to sanctions, with broad sanctions programs in place since 1988. So, how effective are economic sanctions? CNBC's Nessa Anwar discusses the case for, and against sanctions.

If by work you mean the people living in the country suffering because of it, and the people that hold the money and power almost doesn't notice it, than YES sanctions work.

Sanctions I think works better if wealthy business people have a lot of influence/power. Works not as well when it is mainly military generals that have power since he really can get all he needs within the country.

Economic sanctions are an absolute joke. Look at Cuba and Iran. Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa held out for a while too.

Sanctions do not work quickly or alone, but they weaken a government to the point that the governed may negotiate a change. Unfortunately sanctions can impact the population which is the reason officials are sanctioned in these cases.

So Sanctions are a fancy way of using force to get what you want.

Sanctions work if everyone is on the same page. In the past, they turned to other countries for help so it will be the same this time too.

The sanctions applied by those countries which are stuck in their ideological world not the reality

Targeted sanctions can greatly inconvenience some of the folks in power, or at least make it harder them to spend their ill-gotten gains. For example, Carrie Lam (Chief Executive of Hong Kong) has to use cash for everything because no bank will open an account for her due to US sanctions.

I'm not saying sanctions work, but freezing the assets of the Tatmadaw does at least make their life a whole lot less enjoyable as compared to doing nothing.

If a leader in one country ignores all aspects of sanction, who will suffer, the people or the leader? What has the economic sanction achieve in the countries on which it has been imposed so far?
