Ubuntu and LMDE are two of the hottest Debian based Linux distros. Ubuntu is the world’s most popular Linux distro and LMDE is one of the most fantastic distros you’ll use today, and it’s quite underrated at the same time.

Both might be debian based and have a similar lineage, but that’s where the similarities start and end. Ubuntu and LMDE provide different desktop environments, different kinds of performance profiles, different software pools and the differences just go on. But one thing that they both have in common is, they both provide super polished computing experiences. Best in the business.

And LMDE is rising very fast in the Linux world and I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a top contender to Ubuntu’s thorne of the hottest Linux distro. So in this epic showdown, we’re pitting LMDE against Ubuntu LTS version and see how they compare against each other in terms of performance, the user interface, software availability and finally see if the developers of Linux Mint have brought out the ultimate trump card or is Ubuntu the king for a reason. Oh this is going to be interesting.

Maybe it's just my old laptop, but LMDE wins because it's so snappy and smooth and it's very easy to customise into a very modern looking system. Ubuntu while I love the way it looks out of the box, always had stutters and hiccups for me, not the mention all the errors the kernel was throwing off on every boot. Debian is just the pinnacle of stability and the Mint team do an amazing job to polish it up into something even a newb could fall in love with.

Another very good comparison partial.... Covered the main points.Once again, good visuals.LMDE, would be my choice between the two, but as it stands I am very happy using MX Linux with KDE plasma.

Ubuntu LTS is almost 2 years old, and this is a major drawback for me. LMDE's basis of Debian Stable is actually newer right now. This situation might change with Ubuntu LTS 24.04, but for now I stick with LMDE. (Not having to mess with snaps is a bonus.)

I use both the main Linux Mint on my desktop and LMDE on one of my laptops.I can't fault either version of Linux Mint. Ubuntu is getting too heavy due to the amount of snap packages it now pushes you into using.

If you are using flatpak for most major software there is no fear of old packages.

For 32 bit OS user, LMDE is an awesome choice
Unfortunately if you want a lightweigt environtment, you must install the DE separately

I'm going to have to disagree with your gaming point to Ubuntu. Getting gaming going on LMDE takes almost zero effort. All I did was install the Steam, Bottles & ProtonUp-Qt Flatpaks and away you go. I was playing all my favourite games in no time. I think the most complicated thing I had to do was install Flatseal so I could give my other SSD file permissions so it showed up in the Steam storage options.

Used both of the above but ended up with ArcoLinux 🎉top distro

Sorry, I'll go with Mabox, Mageia, Manjaro, Debian, and MX as my top five distros. Flatpacks are horrible. Native package is best. I'd prefer Openbox, Fluxbox, LXDE, JWM, and Sway for desktop environments.

LMDE becasue you are not forced to use SNAP's. there is a browder selection of programs to use in LMDE apt, appimage and flatpak. I do not like the way ubuntu is heading. Ubuntu used to be really good but no longer.
