Linux Mint 21 or LMDE 5 – what to take?

Hello folks. The Linux distro Linux Mint appears in two editions. One is based on Ubuntu, the other on Debian. Both are actively maintained and thus receive the same application layer from Linux Mint. So all the goodies from Linux Mint. Now we try to resolve this in-house competitive situation and give a clear answer to the question of whether you should use the normal Linux Mint edition or the LMDE is better for you.

LMDE is the way forward - it is a great move by Linux Mint

LMDE needs to come out with an XFCE edition since it has a 32 bit variant, and XFCE is going to be much lighter on those 32 bit systems than Cinnamon.

LMDE 5 is my choice. They should make this the default.

I switched from the Mint to LMDE and I am very happy. Canonical scares me, free and open source is the way to go.

I am using LMDE and find it a bit faster than LM21, but I like Mint and have used it for a long time, thanks for the video

LMDE. I'm on it now for my daily driver. Rock Solid.

I have LMDE5 32-bit on my 2007 Acer Travelmate 6410 which still is in "as new" condition. I lent my beeier machine to someone and use this one as a basic browser/YouTube/mail mule, do a few spreadsheets and some word processing. I did have MX on here, but Xfce peeved me for it being so immature and ancient. My little ancient old rigs runs just fine on a mere 2GB RAM and Cinnamon doesn't cause any bother. So, LMDE5 it is. Wish you could see my lovely desktop layout.

I use Ubuntu based Linux Mint on my Dell workstation with i7 processor and LMDE on my old Dell dual core PC.Both work fine, both are rock solid stable and smooth.I would use the standard version of Mint on more modern systems and LMDE on older less capable systems as in my experience this gives the best results.Good video thank you.

A week or two after LMDE6 leaves beta I'm taking the plunge. I've been playing with the beta on a live usb and am very impressed

Thanks for this video. A comparison of LMDE vs Debian with the Cinnamon desktop would be interesting.

Had a few hiccups with nvidia drivers on LMDE 5 but everything was easily solved. I'm not an expert but have used LMUE for a while on a secondary machine. I like the philosophy behind LMDE and will stick with it as, with my level of expertise, I can not "feel" any difference.

I prefer stability over bleeding edge which is why I'm considering LMDE.

LMDE is what I use. I like LMDE very mush. LMDE is very stable and fast.

I prefer to use the LMDE issue as I do not care for Mark Shuttleworth or Canonical making unilateral Microsoft like decisions and I definitely don't like Snapd

I'm using mx linux for two years also based on debian, if it ever breaks I'll surely go to lmde 👍

LMDE 6 is my choice. Ubuntu has become somewhat user hostile by forcing snaps on users. That's in addition to the Amazon fiasco of the past, and they also want to put ads in the terminal.

Plus they are moving to an immutable all-snap iso eventually.

Once they do that, Mint will no longer use Ubuntu as the base. Debian will become the default.

I wanted to get away from canonical so opted for LMDE and I can honestly say it's great.

One advantage you forgot to mention for LMDE is "stability".

As a years long Linux user now I'm tired of distro hopping only to find the thing breaks, then you move on to another and so on.
With LMDE you get rock solid stability, few updates and a current desktop environment.

I'm sure the Mint team will do what it takes to make sure LMDE has the necessary Flatpak binaries, although I always try to use debs

I currently use both on my 2 laptops of the same specs. I just cannot tell the difference. At my next upgrade I intend to move to LMDE on everything.

Ubuntu is forcing all flavors to drop flatpak so Ubuntu and all of its flavors will be Snap only, if you have flatpak installed it is uninstalled and you have to figure out how to reinstall it manually.
