Today's video is all about how to store your kefir grains when you take a break from making kefir. I will demonstrate 2 methods to store your grains.
Method 1-To store grains less than 2 weeks: Put 1 tablespoon of kefir grains into a quart jar and add 3-4 cups of milk (not ultra-pasteurized). Store in the refrigerator up to 1 week. For 2 week storage: 1 tbsp. to 7-8 cups of milk.
Method 2-To store grains 2 weeks-6 months: 1. Rinse the kefir grains in filtered water or make sure your water source is clean and chlorine-free.
2. Spread grains on unbleached parchment and allow to dry for a few days. 3. Put grains in glass canning jars and coat with organic powdered milk. I make sure the powdered milk covers the bottom of the jar.
Store in the refrigerator up to 6 months.
*I usually have several sets of kefir grains in storage just to be sure I have a backup.
When you are ready to make kefir again, wake-up the grains. It may take at least a week before they are back to normal.
Hope this video helps you because kefir grains are very important!
Keeping your own grains can save you so much money and provide you with a nutrient-dense probiotic food. Kefir is very important in our home and one of our staples for health!

Best,
Caren

I put my grains into a plastic container, cover them with milk, and put it into the freezer. The longest I froze them was just under three years. I thawed them, and after about seven days of straining and putting in fresh milk, they were back to full action making kefir.

Ha! So many ways to store! I have an abundance of grain growth using raw milk as well. Leaving for a couple months and am experimenting with several of the storage suggestions: freezing in milk, storing in back of fridge in milk, drying and storing in dry milk. Plus taking some with me. It will be fun to see what works best when I get back!

والله يا إني قضيت ساعات أبحث على وصف شامل لطريقة الحفظ و أخيرا لقيت و ساعدتني بعض التعليقات من التأكد أن الوصف في المقطع هو أفضل الطرق 🙏🏽

Thanks, I live alone and making 1lt of kefir a day is giving me too much, so I guess I will do the 1 week fridge store while I consume what I have already there :)

I’m so glad I saw this. I’ve been using the freeze-dried kefir powder for ages but it doesn’t have as many probiotic strains and it only works a few times before you have to replace it. I’ve been wanting the real deal, but am often away for a month to six weeks. Now I know I can store it! I hope you’ll tell us how to wake them up...

I store my kefir grains in refrigerator w fresh milk. I make sure to change milk periodically. I’ve dried them and used the dried milk formula to store them in freezer. I used little plastic containers(like paint is stored in) I revitalize those. I had my grains for years. Donating to people. Now I’m back to dairy kefir and growing more grains.

We got a freeze dryer this year and I found that I can freeze dry the excess grains. The wonderful thing about freeze drying is that you do not lose nutrients in the process. Simply rinse the grains and blot dry them with paper towel and spread on your tray (I use silicone sheets on my trays so that you don't have any sticking. Once completed in the freeze dryer I do not powder them, I just put them in my mylar bags with the appropriate sized oxygen absorber and seal. To use, I let sit in milk in a covered jar (and covered with a dishtowel) until you start to see thickening (usually 24-48 hours)

Kefir grains can be dried and will last 18 months, can store the dried grains in a freezer for years, just keep them from the light.

First question: Does it matter if its NONFAT milk powder? That is all they had at Sprouts (whole foods had none). Second question. I have buttermilk powder could I use that instead of milk powder. Thank you, u are awesome!
