I’ve been splitting for years with 6 and 8 lb mauls (5’2” female here). I put my friends’ pre-teen kids to work splitting whenever they come to visit. I just set a bunch of cut firewood on end all over the lawn, split them all to impress them, then set more up and hand THEM the maul. It keeps them busy, no whining about being bored, and when they are done they have an achievement to proudly show their parents. I believe in showing kids they can accomplish something with a little hard work and not be dependent on others.
