Hey everybody and welcome to Leia's Lair. In this episode, we go over the explanation on how Sheev Palpatine groomed Anakin Skywalker before the Clone Wars. Praising Anakin for his achievements and victories made Anakin feel important and special, The Jedi didn't do this as that was their way, it's easier to be more loyal and trustworthy to someone who makes you feel important and special then people who don't. Plus Mace Windu never hid his mistrust of Anakin from day one, choosing between mace and palpatine in that situation was a very easy one for Anakin. Now if Yoda or obi wan has been arresting palpatine instead maybe things would have turned out differently and Anakin would have hesitated

At the end of The Phantom Menace, he says "We'll keep an eye on your career " (paraphrasing). That was the start.

The most tragically frustrating thing about Anakin’s fall to the dark side in the prequels, TCW, and comics is just how unbelievably dumb the Jedi Council of elders were! Like, they let this child under their care speak alone with this old politician from the age of 12, even though they knew he was shady, and didn’t think to intervene at all when Ani started talking about Sith-like ideals? Like, how can you be THAT dense? Honestly, deep down the Jedi Council of elders knew this kid was doomed right from the start. For 14 years, I think the Jedi Council of elders were just arrogant and willfully blind to every glaring red flag Anakin displayed of not being okay, not being able to handle their ridiculously restrictive, emotionally traumatizing, and isolating “conceal don’t feel” tactics and training methods after the life he’d led as a child slave for 9 years with his mom, and thus, not being able to handle the force with all that unhealthily pent up anger and fear. All because they were so focused on “fulfilling the prophecy of the chosen one” and didn’t want to change their ways.

Obviously, none of this excuses Anakin for choosing the dark side and for becoming a villain. However, I just don’t know how anyone can deny that the Jedi Council of elders had just as much of a hand in fucking this poor kid up as Palpatine.

Anakin Skywalker never had any agency over his life. He was born a slave to Watto. Then a creepy cult bought him train as a child soldier because of his good genetics. They left his mother a slave even though they could have easily freed her and gotten her an apartment and a job at space Denny's. Then palatine poked holes in the jedi facade in order to groom him to become the attack dog for his death cult and arranged for his wife to die. For a couple decades he was a crippled SS officer in a robot suit genociding when and where Palpatine told him to. I can't even think of Darth Vader as a villan. He and everyone he loved were taken advantage of so different people could profit off of his natural gifts. This fleshed out backstory does make Return of The Jedi more touching. It makes sense why he would turn back to the light for Luke, his son and one of the few people to actually love him and respect his agency and ability to choose his own life.
