A Course in Miracles vs. The Direct Path

This video is for anyone who is suffering, struggling, confused, in fear, doubt, anger and who would like to experience peace and happiness and even more importantly, to be established in it so you no longer get sucked into (or stuck in) body sensations, memories, stories, grievances, events.

In this video I detail two different methods to reach peace and happiness. The path of purification which is A Course in Miracles – where bring subject and object closer together through forgiveness or blessing with holiness or with love – so that the object dissolves into the subject and eventually the Self is remembered. The Direct Path starts a realization that you are consciousness, the absolute, and you rest/stand knowingly there seeing that everything (thoughts, feelings, sensations) simply arise and disappear within this Self.

Both paths are great- and everyone gets to decide which route they want to take – a scenic gradual route or the fast track. No path is right or wrong or better or best – but it’s good to know the choices available to you.

Yes. It’s as Ken Wapnick points out: ACIM isn’t literal; it’s metaphorical, which is why the Course itself makes clear that it’s only one path among many. Really, ACIM *is* the Direct Path, appearing as a metaphorical system using a sophisticated blend of Christian and psychotherapeutic language.

I’d disagree that ACIM isn’t a nondual teaching, though. On the contrary, it’s radically nondual. It posits that ONLY God - perfect Oneness - is real, and therefore anything that appears to be separate from God: bodies, time, space, the blue book, the concept of individuality, special relationships etc etc - are pure imagination within the dualistic thought system of the ego (which is also unreal).

It uses dualistic language because we believe we exist in duality; in other words, that there’s an ‘us’ and a ‘Jesus’. A dualistic thought system (like Christianity) would agree that there IS an ‘us’ and a Jesus. But that’s not what the Course propounds: quite the opposite, in fact.

Nonetheless, all paths that seek to speak to an apparent ego that believes itself to be separate and ‘real’ must start from a position of dualism. Even the Direct Path, to be ‘followed’ by a ‘person’ means that there’s a person and a path: i.e. duality.

The moment the ‘I’ arises, what must arise with it is the concept of ‘not I’. True nonduality has no ‘I’, no ‘paths’, no ‘thing’ at all.

What I love about pointers like The Direct Path, ACIM, Advaita Vedanta, The Work of Byron Katie, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching etc etc, is that they ALL ‘exist’ in our dualistic world so that ‘we’ can engage with ‘them’ and be reminded that we have a choice to see separation or wholeness; comparison or unity; ego or Self.

After 20 years repeating the course and the lessons it became a ritual and I hit a wall. I didn't want to do it anymore. I reached my limit. Climbing over the wall I found the direct path, no rituals needed. There I found the missing pieces to the puzzle. I rest in knowing I Am, nothing to seek.

I found you from the know thyself documentary and It’s interesting, I just discovered ACIM 2 months ago and I was practicing the direct path and didn’t know it..but it coalesced into one today. I found your description very helpful. Thank you.

OMG, so I have been in the present for a couple of days....and GETTING IT!!!! HALLELUJAH!!! Then, a 'problem' came up, someone did something I didn't like! I was like 'How dare they upset my state of being'!!! How should I react?? Then I said, just phone them and ask the question, with love, don't I did! I haven't left me place of peace, there is no anger, just a little I feel so joyous!!! Then I listened to this I am like...."YES this is it!!! Thank you, again!!

Hi! I came across that video because I needed reassurance that I'm all good, Lol.
I've been on non dual path for about 10 years now, on and off with deep understanding, but definetly it called me since i was i my early twenties. I reached for ACIM yesterday, because I heared about it so much... And I couldn't understand a thing. I tried today again and was like... "am I doong something wrong, what is this book about?" It is so hard for me to grasp this idea of separate Jesus, God and Holy Spirit... I was raised Christian, but I felt like this is already so foreign to me. I had this sensation of "nah, I dont want to be separate again, it feels like walking backwards now..." like... going back to belief of separate self just to recognize the same truth all over again... felt like a lot of unnecessary work.

I felt soothed by your video, so thanks for that ❤️

I am ❤️

Thanks Lisa 🌹- hmmm, I don't think I will take the route to walk from New York to California :) - I am both an ACIM and non-dual student. They seem to blend so well together - I just find that my mind does all sorts of crazy when I fight with the guilt of which is the right way - God's way. I am having glimpses - and sometimes a total recognition - that I am truly only One with all that is. But deep in my Self, none of this matters. We are all connected. We are all truly One. My ultimate goal is - like you put it - to stay as mySelf - always and ever. Thank you for this! I love you ♥

When I clicked on this I was a little doubtful, half-sneering. I leave it thankful, and smiling. I won't go into the details of my own experiences, suffice it to say that I am currently working on a synthesis of exactly these two things and listening to you I was just like: "Oh, yeah, obviously. I already know this, it's what I've been working on." Not a coincidence, a synchronicity. Thanks!

Thank you for the comparison. As I understand the course is direct and simple, and there is no real difference. The course says in workbook lesson 39: “But do you believe that guilt is hell? 5 If you did, you would see at once how direct and simple the text is, and you would not need a workbook at all. 6 No one needs practice to gain what is already his”. The scribe did not get it, so more and more words were added. Many course students, myself including, do not get it directly either and we continue to study.
I’m going to rethink that. Thank you for making me aware of it.

It is very helpful, thank you. The last bit about staying as conciousness and being able to be with the memories, thoughts, emotions (vs. BEING those things) was incredibly helpful. I see the evolution of my being as it has unfolded and I understand why it doesn't just drop into our laps. Every individual journey is perfect and leads to Oneness. Beautiful. Life is beautiful 😍

So good! I go back and forth with thinking I don’t “need” ACIM teachings and have moments of being there in oneness & want to jump to Non-Dual, Direct path. Have you heard of a teacher named Paul Brunton?! I think you’d like his work. He calls the HS the OverSelf…that little shift really connects. Or all this is really stripped down Vedanta principles and that really resonates as what Eckhart Tolle & Adyashanti teach, deeper to then Rupert & the likes. I can get behind the idea that the missing years of Jesus he may have been in India & seems to me came back & teaching Advaita Vedanta…that’s why I do like the translations of the Christian metaphors in ACIM. It’s all good! ✨💗

This is a clear and simple explanation of the complimentary benefits of knowings and understanding both paths leading to self realization. ❤️ well done 😘

Wow… 25 years and you still do not see that ACIM is one of the most uncompromising non dual paths out there! It sounds like you got bogged down in the dualistic language the course uses. And that is tricky to navigate, but you once you “ see” the nonduality you cannot unsee it! It is literally there from the first lesson and in nearly every paragraph and sentence.

I'm confused. You've replaced using The Course to follow "The Direct Path"?

My frustration just seems to grow. I think my challenge is how to apply it to everyday life, the mundane. I can do my Course work in the morning, listen to some of your old and new videos and podcasts, do some meditation, etc., then go out into the everyday and lose it all. I don't understand how to apply this going throughout your day. There aren't any examples. This is where my struggle and frustration is.

What you did wrong Lisa Natoli is that you followed A Course in Wapnick, not the real Course In Miracles.

Now you are lost in confusion.
