There’s also the coaltana inside the charcoal bag next the the the knocked over BBQ at the upper yard all you have to do is defend it from waves of larva and you can pull it out of a piece of charcoal

Honestly grub armor with the red ant club will do you good, at least until you can get ladybug + weevil shield + pinch whacker. Which should be your setup for a while.

Can somebody shed some light on the “craftable” trinkets? (Nifty needle, astonishing acid, etc)

Their wiki pages say they’re available to craft after analyzing their resources (thistle needle, acid gland, etc) but I don’t have ANY options to craft any trinkets, it’s like they don’t even exist
