Stronger than he gets credit for. He stood up to southerners unlike all his successors (other than Lincoln)

From a historical perspective Taylor doesn't get a lot of love. The more I read about him the more I respect him as a leader. He was a large slave owner but opposed it's expansion. He favored the admission of California and New Mexico as states so they could bypass the territorial phase and keep the slavery decision out of Congress's hands.

And most of all he was 100% pro United States. He didn't give a shit about threats of secession from the South. He said he would personally lead the army into any state and personally hang any man who took up arms against the Union. You have to wonder if Taylor had lived if his hardline policy toward the south might have prevented the Civil War.

Zachary Taylor, president as neutral as Switzerland

Definitely flawed, but it’s possible the south may have backed down because of his reputation as a war hero (if he threatened to fight off sedition via force). Had he lived, he might have gone down as a better president.

Zachary Taylor liked to smoke, his breath killed friends whenever he spoke.

It says a lot about how screwed up America was that with slavery dividing the nation, Zack said I refuse to say whether I support it or not, and that gets him elected because the ones taking sides couldn't win over the public.
Also as Bill Bryson said, Millard Fillmore showed as much power as President as what would've happened if they propped up Zack's body in the chair for the rest of the term.

He just wanted to keep the country united, but he just didn't have much time to do anything about it. A for effort.

Old Zack Taylor won't work on a Sunday, and that's how there came to be a President-for-one-day.

Weird trivia item - Lillian Gish, who was a famous actress at one time, may have been a descendant of Zachary Taylor!

Stood up to the South & stood up for the Union (could’ve used more diplomatic skill in dealing with congress); didn’t raise tariffs a lot; and stood against the compromise of 1850. Didn’t help native Americans though, so demerits on that.

Zachary Taylor's daughter was married to Jefferson Davis, Secretary Of War, and future President of the Confederate States Of America. Then she died and Jefferson married Varina, who outlived him.
