Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Taylor was a career military officer and a hero of the Mexican-American War. Despite having limited political experience, he won the presidency as a member of the Whig Party. Taylor's presidency was marked by the country's territorial expansion and the controversy over the admission of California as a free state. Taylor died suddenly from an illness just 16 months into his presidency, and he is considered one of the shortest serving U.S. Presidents. Despite his brief time in office, Taylor remains an important figure in American history.
