Western AF presents | The Dauphin of Mississippi | "Witness"

Because the past is Prelude:

This was written on the occasion of senators Jeff Flake and John McCain giving away the sacred Apache land of Chi'chil Bildagoteel (Oak Flat in Tonto National Forrest a place akin to "Mt Sinai" in their culture) to Rio Tinto and Resource Management, Multinational copper mining conglomerates, in a 2014 "Must Pass" armed services bill, while the Apache nation was working to declare them a National Historic Place. After years of legal battles all seemed lost when the Trump Administration finally green lit the project. It was the culmination of what Glanton and Company had really been sent to do, "tame the land" for extraction (their story was at the height of the gold boom. You can check out the historical bits of the Glanton gang over on our friend Mr.History Geek's Instagram page as he'll be putting out vignettes all week in conjunction with this releas.).

But massive action by modern Apache warriors fighting to retain connection to their ancestors has resulted in a pause, and the passage through the House of the Save Oak Flats Act that has yet to go before a hostile senate.

Maybe we didn't "witness" the brutality of their actions, but to turn around and ignore the continuing cultural genocide when it happens every day around.....Bears Ears, Standing Rock, and on and on.

My question to us is, "How long are we gonna let it happen in our name?"

My other question to you, is 'Who wants to yell at their senator a minute?"

Great piece of art, put together very well with the introduction. Wonderful storytelling as well.
Chords and lyrics below as always folks

Standard tuning, Capo on 2
This is the Western AF version, the studio version is more or less the same though
At the end of the chorus, they play a little repeated Am-G-Am switch I didn't note for reasons of simplicity

Intro Am G F G F G Am
Verses Am G / F G F G Am / Am G / F G F G Am
Chorus G Am / G Am / C G F G Am / F G Am G / F G Am
Interlude Am G / F G F G Am / Am G / F G F G Am

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
Desert stretches on before you and your water jar is empty
You got six shots in your pistol and none left on your belt
And your horse is getting tired, it's acting kinda lame
And the men who ride behind you now got one thing on their brain

[Chorus]
You're gonna die this time, you just know it
You're gonna die this time, that’s a fact
You’ll answer for all your sins to whomever is present
And they’ll butcher you for what you did to them
They’ll butcher you for what you did

[Verse 2]
When you met your band of brigands you thought that you were out of options
Glanton he was paying gold with Mexico paying him
To thin down the Apache when they grew scarce you moved on to Yumas
Or Mexicans if they were poor enough, didn’t no one gave a damn

[Chorus]
You're gonna die this time, you just know it
You're gonna die this time, that’s a fact
You’ll answer for all your sins to whomever is present
And they’ll butcher you for what you did to them
They’ll butcher you for what you did

[Verse 3]
Y’all were sleeping at the Ferry across the Colorado River
When the Yuma snuck up on you you did not hear a sound
Now you’re the only one left riding, yes, you’re the only witness
To this chapter in a history about how a deal goes down

[Chorus]
You're gonna die this time, you just know it
You're gonna die this time, that’s a fact
You’ll answer for all your sins to whomever is present
And they’ll butcher you for what you did to them
They’ll butcher you for what you did

[Interlude]

[Verse 4]
Well, you will ride until your horse dies and walk long as you’re able
Through this broken, rock-strewn sage-land hell, the one they’re taking now
And they will find whatever’s in it though it might take em years they’ve found
The Future ain’t no harder bet, there’ll just be less to go around.

[Chorus]
You're gonna die this time, you just know it
You're gonna die this time, that’s a fact
You’ll answer for all your sins to whomever is present
And they’ll butcher you for what you did to them
They’ll butcher you for what you did

[Verse 5]
Well we’re back here in this desert and it seems that we’ve learned nothing
Since the last time we bore witness to how the deal goes down

I’ve been watching this channel with all its talented performers for a while now. and I just learned about John Joel glanton from this song. it blew my mind that I have never heard of this piece of of history despite the Yuma Colorado river crossing being just 40 miles from my house. Thank you for this amazing song ! You got me hooked on the blood meridian book now.
