I’ve done lots of research on the best surface for oil painting & wanted to share as much as poss in 1 video. Hopefully this isn’t an information overload.

Here’s more info on these substrates & stores/brands I’ve purchased them from:

1) cotton or linen canvas can be stretched on wood or aluminum stretcher frames. They’re found pre-stretched, pre-primed or as raw material at art stores or specialty stores.

2) hardwood can be found as cradled/uncradled panels (usually Baltic birch/basswood) at art stores. You can buy it raw, pre-primed, or canvas-mounted. I’ve also bought raw hardboard panels from Home Depot & had them cut it to size in the store.

3) ACM/CCM stands for aluminum or copper composite material or can be found under industrial brand names like Dibond. It’s a layer of plastic between 2 sheets of metal & is resistant to warping. You can get it cut, pre-primed, or canvas-mounted at some art stores. You can also buy the raw material from plastic suppliers (if you can find a good source in Canada let me know!)

I am training to be an art conservator and i am happy to see an artist actually thinking about these things, like movement of the canvas or wood and such things!
