This may be one of the most important guitar videos. I'm serious.

We spend so much time trying to learn everything, get confused, and then burned out. Where we should instead start with something that's goal oriented, foundational, as well as keep up moving.

This workout is short enough and long enough that it keeps us activated with the guitar. If used daily it will open up a world of more techniques while allowing us to have a solid foundation of guitar playing.

So, this will he my daily workout. I may find others, but this one will be my goto.

I want to thank you for these exercises. I have played professionally most of my life and now at almost 70 I had a "mild" stroke a year ago. I started these exercises 6 months ago and I can play again. Not yet to the degree I was but well on my way back. Thanks a million!!

Some suggestions for after you've been doing this for a while:

1. On all the picking exercises, start with an upstroke instead of a downstroke.
I find it to be especially useful for the more picking-heavy exercises, such as the spider exercise.
You can also try playing only downstrokes or upstrokes.

2. You can increase the video speed as you get better. For example, I find the legato exercises way too easy so I play them at 1.5 speed.

3. Some exercise specific suggestions:
Legato - try playing it unplugged.
on the last legato exercise, you can do 134 instead of 124. This way you're also exercising your Ring finger.
Extended stretches - try moving down the frets, as the distance between the frets is bigger on the lower ones
(Personally I'm not there yet lol, as I still can't do all 3 stretching exercises without stopping)

Remember, you don't have to do ALL exercises - for example,
I don't find the bending exercise very effective for me, so I usually skip it.
And lastly, thanks for this video mike!

This is hands down the best practice routine on youtube. It covers almost everything and exposed some things i should work on. Those 3 fret slide walks made me realize I let off the string prematurely and don't commit to the slide like I should.

This is THE video. No more wondering what to warm up with. Thank you!

It would be cool if you could do another one of these with different exercises, for example tremolo picking, vibrato, scale patterns, palm muting, like just other skills that this video didn't cover.

Thank you for the lessons!

Wow this video is amazing.. Especially for someone who has been playing and never broken the barrier of beginner intermediate. I mean I quit guitar after John Petrucci's guitar lesson.. And your video gives me... Hope.. And inspiration. This lesson is meticulous and profound. I am sure if followed regularly in 100 days anyone would see the difference.. It is a well rounded lesson. Hats off to you Mike..

As a complete beginner, I'm only adding one "section" at a time and building, and I've only just started to add the extended stretches to the routine, but it has helped my playing a ton.

wow amazing routine, i had a multi year break after playing and teaching myself for 9 years and just got back into it again 1 month ago and this is absolutely perfect to get back into that hand synchronization and dexterity

Just started learning this routine.

The other video of just the spider exercise is, without a doubt, a great one.

No doubt our fingers will get stronger and better doing these every day for a few weeks.

Very good!

This is great. I’ve learned hundreds of noodles and riffs but when I try to sit down and write a daily workout routine, I either go blank or practice them in the wrong order, putting too much strain on certain fingers.
I’m really glad you focused on stretching, warming up, and giving each hand a break from certain motions. Reminds me of the old Petrucci workout videos.
