Clearing 2020: what it is and how to prepare for it.
Catriona Oldershaw, Associate Director Admissions & Recruitment at the University of Buckingham

Session 1: Clearing: what it is and how to prepare for it
Catriona introduces what Clearing and Adjustment is, why it may be relevant this year, and how to prepare for it.

Catriona advises that Clearing is the way to secure a university place if you have been rejected by your firm and insurance choice, or if you have decided to go into Clearing by declining your original university place.

She also introduces Adjustment, which is available if you have met or exceeded the conditions of your firm and insurance offer. Where you can secure a place at another course or university, without losing your firm university place. Once you have verbally accepted a new offer, the university will add themselves to your UCAS application, ready for your acceptance.

Catriona also introduces how school grades have been calculated given exams have not taken place as usual this year.

She also provides some good news in relation to university entry. Including that this year (2020) will see the lowest number of 18-year olds, meaning university entry may be less competitive than in the future (and previously). As well as potentially a reduction in the number of students starting this year, particularly international students given the Covid-19 challengers. Universities will also be understanding to the issues with results and may therefore be more flexible regarding your university place. But Catriona also mentions universities are subject to a numbers cap. and advises why this is.

Catriona then updates students on the process from Tuesday 11th August to results day. Universities have the results (under embargo so they can’t release them) to allow students to access UCAS Track on results day, and should this be processed in time, see on the same day as receiving their results if they have obtained their university place. Although it should be acknowledged that some universities may need to delay the decision, so not all may be available.

Finally, Catriona introduces tips on how to prepare for Clearing. Including suggesting a table to complete which will rank university opportunities so you are well prepared on the day – all towards making informed university choices.
