I really appreciate this presentation. I am just orthodox Christian, here in the Appalachian Baptist world. There is a Coptic Orthodox Church in Roanoke and I never understood the reason why we weren’t in communion with them. Our church is in the Bulgarian patriarchate and we have zero Bulgarian members. I am glad to learn that contemplation of these matters is above my pay grade.

Funny thing is that, in Spanish, we lack a distinct word for Eastern while in English you have Oriental and Eastern, which help to make the distinction. We only have Oriental, which means exactly that in English, or Eastern. In turn, whenever you refer to the Orthodox from any tradition, adding Oriental is not only useless, but it's confusing and needlessly verbose, and as such, no one uses that. Instead, we just refer to everyone as Orthodox, and we just make the distinction as to what particular Tradition they adhere to. Even trying to delve into the IN/OF argument is murky as our language does not help make the distinction - We have EN/DE, but both are mutually interchangeable and so they wind up leading to the same meaning as they use our version of the verb "to be" to make sense. Thus, when you refer to the Orthodox Church, la Iglesia Ortodoxa, you could be referring to either the Greek Orthodox, the Coptic Orthodox, the Russian Orthodox, ect. I dunno if official reunification will happen during my lifetime, but unofficially it has already happened here. God bless Orthodoxy. Dios bendiga a la Ortodoxia.

This was very interesting to watch as a western person who converted from Roman Catholicism (Chalcedonian) to Orthodoxy in the Coptic Orthodox Church (non-Chalcedonian). Thank you for the good overview. We pray for the reunion of the Greeks and Romans with us, so that we can all be together again, sharing the same faith and the same cup. May God grant it.

Wow the more you know! My mom is Eastern Orthodox and my dad is Oriental Orthodox and I was baptized in a Coptic church and I never really knew the difference till now. It so sad that they want to stay divided.
