If your chainsaw is not cutting straight then this is most likely the issue.
It is often overlooked as most people think that it dose not have a significant effect. Have you ever put a new chain in and it still cuts crooked. Check your bar gauge. You can buy a bar gauge guide from most saw sealers, or on line.

Could be a sharpening issue aswell, different angles on each side.most people find it easier sharpening one side then the other causing you to slightly get off angle the more you sharpen.

Usually the bar wears unevenly when the chain hasn't been sharpened properly, people tend to bias one side so they wear faster. People don't flip the bar around either because who can read oregon, Stihl etc on the bar when it's upside down 😂

If the gap is too big how do you make it smaller?

Wrong.
When you start to J cut or curve cut it means your bar needs dressing as the height on one side is lower then the other.
It often happens after you get a bar pinched.
