Criticising in front (or behind your back) to her friends is her way of making sure you don't look good to her friends. It's part insecurity and part vulnerability. This conversation usually goes "Your man is good" her response is "Yeah, but (Insert fault or shortfall here)". Now if she continues to parade you around her friends talking you up that can be the same problem but in a narcissistic way. She is doing it to make herself look good and god help you if screw up that image. The balanced woman knows her friends, can say good things about you to them and if she is saying anything negative she would be doing it for a bit of advice, which is natural. Face it, people will talk to their friends about their relationships but if the above negative ways are happening the problem is with her and it needs a good conversation to happen to figure out why.

Men don't tend to trash talk girlfriends/ wives

E.g. at university (with my buddies from high school years) you could get a HUGE verbal blowout with the guys if you insulted someone's girl
Some of us (not me, I dated outside of college connections) ended up dating where 3 or 4 of my buddies would be respectively dating 3 or 4 women who were each other's best friends as well.

One guy was meant to be away with the boys but got sick and quietly went to the apartment he shared with his GF and fell asleep, he woke up to the group of girls, unaware he was there yet, gossiping and trashing him a bit but one of his best friends relentlessly, telling a broad group of girls what the guy sounded like or said during sex, how he was still learning what he was doing, mocking his confidence etc.

They had little to no hesitation about trashing the guy they were currently choosing to be with and they also knew that via the other girls potentially spreading it back to boyfriends it would mean everyone could hear this horrible talk.

Guys tend to talk just about one night stand stuff with women they assume are talking about them too
