Pink Himalayan salt is used in speciality foods, spa treatments, and even home design. 100 grams of it can cost $5 to $8, up to 20 times more than generic table salt. So, why is it so expensive?

I’m a Tibetan guy, my ancestors have been using Himalayan salt for 1000s of years. It’s no different, safe your money and buy a normal salt, save the environment.

What makes me laugh is it's millions of years old, but in the shops it's got a use by date

I had no idea Himalayan salt was this popular. One time I bought it, because they were out of regular salt, and I pretty much been using it ever since. I find it not as "harsh" and "easier on the palette", like the guy in the video said. It just "tastes" better to me, that's the only reason I switched. And I buy salt like maybe 2-3 times a year, so it's not a huge expense for me.

Thank you for participating in my TED talk.

i have cooked with pink himalayan salt for years, because it's what my mom used. i never really took into account how pretty it is, i just did what my mom did!
I like the grinders it comes in at the stores, vs the way table salt is usually packaged/marketed. i also like that it's less salty than the traditional table salt, which allows me to control the saltiness of my food and the distribution of that salt a bit better.
Samin Nosrat said in one part of her book, that it doesn't really matter what salt you use, as long as you know YOUR salt well. I use flake salt when seasoning steaks, because it has a larger surface area, and cheap iodized salt for pasta water, but otherwise... pink salt!

this comment was unnecessary, but here i am anyway... at 2 am...writing it.

Surprisingly, It's still used as table salt in many rural areas of jammu and kashmir.
People have different understanding of luxuries. 🙄

As an Indian, I've been eating pink salt for as far as I can remember, it is really popular in India and used very frequently. It sure has a different taste, and it is often used in traditional digestive medicines. It is also said that it has less drastic effect on your blood pressure than regular salt, so it is recommended to people with high BP problems as a replacement. It tastes a bit different than your regular salt for sure. it has more "pleasant" and flavored taste than regular salt, which is just.... salty.

However, only the west is obsessed with it's so called "healing" power. Nobody used these salts as lamp or for massage or bath products for last thousands of years in these regions (Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan and India where these are found). It's not even that expensive here, to be honest. West is just being west, I guess..

Me: Good question.

A interesting break down I saw was that, out of the trace materials, there were no microplastics within Himalayan Salt when compared to Sea Salt. Since Sea water is heavily polluted. I am definitely not saying Himalayan is magical like many do, but I think that is a fair comparison.
