How to Make Your Own Sour Cream | Homemade Cultured Cream Recipe with Raw or Pasteurized Cream

The more we delve into this homestead lifestyle, the more we are amazed by how easy it is to make items that we had previously only ever purchased in a package from the grocery store. Case in point, cultured cream! With only 2 simple ingredients, making your own cultured cream at home is about as easy as it gets.

Edits to Video:
Note in the video I referred to "milk" a few times instead of saying "cream".
Also, I said Creme Fraiche is thinner than sour cream but it's actually the opposite. Creme fraiche is usually thicker with 30% fat content while sour cream is typically around 20%.

Awesome easy recipe! I just found a raw milk provider in my local area and have been collecting recipes for all the milk products I usually get from the grocery. Looks like you are showing lots of scratch recipes that I'm looking for ! New subscriber! 🤩🤩

Thanks for the information. I'll make some. I make milk kefir, so have just checked online.
"Milk kefir is a mesophilic culture that ferments at room temperature between 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is below 70 the grains will be sluggish and temperatures on the higher end of the spectrum the grains will be too active." So I can use my kefir for the culture. Thanks again. 👍👍

Thank you so much! Not many people/homesteaders have their own milk cow. Totally grateful every time you talk about something cow/dairy related. You make it look so simple. God willing, we will get our first one next spring.

Fresh sour cream is so much better! I just posted a video about making butter. Just like sour cream: once you've had homemade you'll never go back to store bought. Thanks for the inspiration, I'm going to make some now!

Could I use this cultured cream as the culture for the farmhouse cheddar?

Do you have to heat it up on the stove or could I just take the raw cream out of the fridge, add yogurt and just leave it out like that for 12-24 hours? Love your videos, they are so helpful and informative!

So I have a question. What is the difference between the sour cream and the homemade yogurt? Is it that you only use the cream of the raw milk and heat it to about 80°? Thanks!!!!

I get my raw milk from a farm and wanted to try making sour cream. I skimmed about a cup and a half of the raw cream and put about a tablespoon or two of kefir grains into it and let it sit for 24 hours. Nothing changed. It was still runny. I don't know what I did wrong. I've been making regular kefir from my raw milk for over a year with no problems. I don't know why it didn't set up. Any suggestions?

So now you use pasteurized milk or pasteurized cream? If it pasteurized cream it's cheaper to buy the sour cream than make it
