The first thing that I thought of when the narrator mentioned Modesto was Scott Peterson.

California (like most states) has its ups and downs. Even within "good" cities, there will be good spots and bad spots. Thanks for sharing!

I worked in the central valley in the 90s. I was told to stay away from Mendota after sundown. That advice came from a large, muscular utility worker.

A large majority of Emeryville crime is from Oakland though. It's right next door and tons of freeway access going every direction

*I was born in Oakland and grew up in Richmond. Where I attended public schools, and went onto graduate from CSUEB with a degree in Nursing. Apparently people and not labels dictate destiny. Never forget it. The key is self-discipline and self-determination to overcome all obstacles. Regardless of any hater labels*

Funny that Mendota is listed, I stopped there a couple weeks ago when I was on my Harley headed back home from a solo road trip. Everyone was watching me, even driving through the gas station just to look. It was a warm day, so I was hanging out for a few minutes drinking water. It was very bizarre, it felt like I crossed the border into Mexico. When I got home I looked up the demographics 98.6 hispanic. I bet everyone in town knew I was there within a few minutes tippy feeling, I didn't feel unsafe, but being a bigger guy probably didn't hurt. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop there again.

I can't believe Richmond is not on here. I used to work in Richmond and lived nearby. You do not want to drive in Richmond at night. Emeryville problem is that it's right next door to Oakland. I'd rate Stockton above Modesto. It's on late night news for all the wrong reasons.

Every state has some city, town or area; that is really “messed up”, not just Cali!! No one can talk about any place, for we are all in the same boat, throughout the country.

California is a big State. Some corners of the State is bad and some are thriving. I live in Mendocino, very classy town and no homeless! We eat our own produce…..I guess I’m very blessed.

I left the Bay Area for Oregon in 1978 and never looked back.

We took the train from Inglewood to Staples Center to see the Lakers game. About half way to our destination. We look down, to my dismay on the horrible sites.

I live close to commerce, about a 5 minute walk, its not that bad, the surrounding cities are worse, Vernon which borders commerce is a lot worse then commerce

I moved out of Modesto for fifteen years. When I came back to visit I was shocked to see cop cars parked at schools. In 12 years of public school there I never saw a cop on campus, they were not needed. Peak America has passed.

I could name a few cities that are much more dangerous than Emeryville. Richmond and Vallejo comes to mind.

My suburban was stolen at a Costco in san bernardino. Guess who lost on that deal when I tried to use my full coverage car insurance with Farmers. It was a long battle, and i was cheated.
