The officer asked me: *Do you know how fast you were going?*
I responded: *I believe I was going the speed limit.*
Then he said: *No you weren't. Is there a reason why you were speeding and going over the speed limit?*
I responded: *as I said sir, I thought I was going the speed limit.*
Got out of ticket with only a verbal warning 😅

I've been pulled over a dozen times and only had one speeding ticket in almost 20 years. The last time I was going 80 from LA to Sacramento and the cop asked me that same question and I said, "officer, I was just going with the flow of traffic." He checked my liscense and wished me a nice trip home.

I know this is probably the best advice. All I can say is, the last three times I've been pulled over, I have been completely honest. In all three cases the police officer let me go with a warning. Sometimes honesty really is the best policy.

This is not always true. Police sometimes apply the “attitude” test. Meaning if you were clearly speeding and they were going to warn you to keep your speed down but instead you act like you have no idea then you can end up with a ticket and you’re not aware of your actions and will also not learn.

Silence can never be misquoted. Just remember what I just told you. Say nothing and be polite. Being respectful means much. Back in 1989, I had purchased a new Firebird Formula and had a temporary plate. Got pulled over and they just wanted to check to see whatever it was they were hoping to find. I was asked, “How fast will this Bird fly?” My response was “it can go up to the Speed Limit.” That’s all I said, they said a few more things then left. I maintained my legal speed until they turned back into their jurisdiction.

To be honest, admitting your fault and saying sorry sometimes gives you a chance that the police officer is cool and just gives you a warning instead of a ticket
