Mini Guide to German Bread!

There are lots of varieties of bread in Deutschland. Here's my mini guide to four categories of bread - Mischbrot, Vollkorn, Roggen and Weizenbrot.

die Semmel - roll (in Bavaria and Austria)

The way you say "Brot" kinda gives away your location in Germany. I think it's a good indication of a successful language learning process when you adapt parts of the local dialect.

The imoprtant thing about Roggenbrot is that it stays "fresh" much longer while wheat bread becomes stale quite quickly.

Gotta love how you pronounce the R in Brot.
Also in Austria we call "Brötchen" by the Name "Weckerl"

in some regions of germany "brötchen" is also called weck or schrippe. maybe there are also some other slang words for it.

Maybe not so fun stuff, but I am interested in how you would explain that to others: Das deutsche Grundgesetz (und die wichtigsten Gesetze/Rechte für jeden deutschen Bürger/Besucher von Deutschland daraus, wie das Verfassungsgericht es anwendet) und wie die Regierung/Gewaltenteilung in Deutschland aufgebaut ist (das Verhältnis Präsident, Kanzler, Bundestag, Bundesrat und das Verhältnis von Legislative, Judikative und Exekutive) - auch eventuell im Vergleich zum UK. Das sind zwar "trockene Themen", aber sie bilden die Grundlage des Lebens für jeden Menschen in Deutschland.

From your brot experience, which type do you find easier on the stomach/teeth ? Most varieties I've tried were incredibly dense and fairly hard, it's a meal all onto itself. Just feels like some form of Soviet (war) ration bread to me. I much prefer the French's finesse

as a swabian (southwest of Germany) we say ""Weckle" instead of Brötchen or Semmel. Berlins say "Stulle" ;)
