As a benz I've done many cam cover reseal jobs, I've definitly noticed that coating but was always told that the new covers come with the same coating. Definitly going to start quoting the covers so it is done right the first time. Also regardless of wether it is a m278 or m157 you dont have to remove the oil cooler to remove the covers, if you remove the drivers side intake cam magnet (with a 8mm open end wrench) and slight pry on the cooler itll give you maybe another 1mm which is enough to get the cover out. This is how I do them and have never damaged the cooler, head or cover so long as you use some finese. This method prevents you from having to deal with those dreaded coolant lines for the turbos. But to each his own.

Just resealing the covers is needed. Use the MB cleaner spray to clean the edges thoroughly and the MB gasket maker will do the job. DO NOT USE Permatex or other brand. If there are leakage from the magnets, replace their big o-rings, no need to replace the magnets themselves. No need to replace the oil-filter housing gasket either, unless they are bad.

The 276.9 engine on a W166 does not need oil filter housing removal as with no doubt many other engines. The factory sealer can be removed with gasket remover, although I suppose to save time, buying $35 new covers might be a wash for a shop.

timing covers do not need to be replaced, you can just sand off the coating with scotch brite

What happens you take light sandpaper and clean the coating off the original cover and reseal them?

Hi Mike. Can you help figure out this. Replaced the oil breather valve on a benz GLK 2014 with the M276.9 engine which requires that you remove the high pressure pump. After replacement of the breather valve and coupling back the pressure pump. I had to turn the engine manually with a 27mm socket from the harmonic balancer and it was confirmed to spin freely but not with the clacking noise from the cam adjuster cos prior to the job the engine rattles so badly and that you feel like when you start you are scared to let it run this usually creates uneasy noises on start up. Now after carrying out the job the engine gets stucked up while turning manually from the 27mm bolt used for the harmonic balancer. Though I refused to let it run up since at the point of hearing this.

Now am I right to say that the cam adjuster is preventing the engine from spinning freely. Could you be nice to help me throw more light on this. I await your response. Thanks

The magnesium out gasing Hydrogen from decomposing makes the sealant break seal. There is many ways to aid is lots less decomposing
