Drone footage reveals devastation of Athens fires

A woman has died as a rapidly spreading wildfire has forced thousands of Greeks to evacuate their home, razing olive groves, homes and cars north of Athens.

The blaze, raging among scorching temperatures, started Sunday afternoon near the village of Varnavas before sending smoke billowing over the capital, about 40 kilometres south.It left residents and tourists in panic as skies turned a yellowish-brown and ash was showered across the city.

The body of what was thought to be a 60-year-old woman was found in a shop in the municipality of Patima Halandriou, about 22 miles northeast of the capital, according to state news agency ANA.

If there was mo thunderstorm then this fire was started either deliberately or carelessly. Just being a hot day does not start a fire.

Hmm ... notice how buildings are reduced to white ash while trees next to them are still standing, some of them still green? Before moving to Japan, I worked for 3 summers as a mountain fire fighter (GS-4, Tanker Truck Operator) in the Mogollon Rim country of Arizona. I have worked with Blue Ridge Hotshots, been dropped on fires by Helitack, and was licensed for hydraulics, chain saw, and so on. But never once was I trained to expect aluminum wheels, engine blocks, or glass to melt while asphalt roads remained intact or animals appear to be flash-frozen. I smell DEWs in the air again, and another 15 minute city on the horizon. And there is not a damn thing we can do about it.

Such a pity they didn't water the trees and ground before this happened - there they are, surrounded by water too... Still, I'm sure there's plenty of EU subsidies and grants available, and maybe remember to water the trees next time....
