Nuclear and networks minister Andrew Bowie has said the International Climate Change Committee "recognises that fossil fuels will play a large part of our energy base load for many decades to come".

Mr Bowie added the UK wants to "max out" North Sea oil reserves, but insisted it "in no way distracts or detracts from our net zero ambitions".

If we had a Norwegian or Qatari style sovereign wealth fund that reinvested money into the country I'd be ok with this. But 99% of this oil revenue will go to the likes of BP or Shell.

Hmmm, so Scotland can not rely on North Sea Oil to become independent? 🤔

I’m old enough to remember 2014 when Scotland was told there wasn’t much left in the North Sea

Uxbridge was lied to about ULEZ. 90% of cars these days meet ULEZ rules and therefore safe. And let's not forget, Tories only won by 495 votes instead of 20 odd thousand

The most sensible thing the PM has done since he came to power. Not greenwashing.

Maybe there should be a referendum on Net Zero policy as there is no democratic recourse to even debate it let alone challange it through mandate. We have an imposed Uniparty policy peddled by moneyed interests and geopolitics outside of national governments. What shred of parliamentary democracy that may have existed is gone.

Strange to hear as a Scot, but I suppose we're still supposed to pretend unionists didn't lie about oil.

Can't wait to be paying import prices for a domestic supply from fields that the Tory said did not exist in 2014. More Resource revenue for Westminster to All over again.

If the tories have decided to do this, it can only mean more money for their wealthy friends and mps offshore bank accounts

When the UK moved from manufacturing to service industries along with the privatisation of public utilities we did ourselves no favours.
Now the only alternative is selling natural resources, because it the only thing left for us.
The money will only get wasted anyway.

Clearly scripted and given no difficult questions.
Also I doubt this man has ever worked on an oil rig in his life.
Ex roughneck, ten years in the North Sea in the 90's.

How much money does this MP stand to gain in his back pocket for supporting these new licences?
